The future of electric car adoption will rely heavily on cost-effective and affordable solutions. While Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Tesla (plus a sprinkling of Porsche) have all produced an array of quality and robust all-electric solutions, these are not overtly affordable to many UK electric car lease customers.
With the removal of the plug-in grant by Olev for both the car and for most charge point solutions, coupled with increasing list prices and reduced discounts, the financial pressure on the EV transition is somewhat discernible. For businesses there are some slightly different persuasive tax advantages - ultra-low company car tax exposure, ability to reclaim 100% of the rentals against corporation tax and NIC reductions on salary sacrifice schemes.
For true retail customers, being personal contract hire and personal contract purchase customers, these arguments are not applicable and it is really the lower running costs, improved driving experience and environmental benefits which are the key selling points. Although upcoming Clean Air Zones may make operating a combustion vehicle more expensive when driving around towns and cities, which will apply to all PCH, BCH and Sal Sac drivers.
To ensure that the small Peugeot SUV will be one of the 195,000+ BEV options registered so far in the UK (October 2022 stats from SMMT -, the Stellantis-owned French manufacturer has replicated the style, substance and desirability from their combustion models in their pure EV ones. Unlike some manufacturers who have created sub-brands or electric offshoots, Peugeot have effectively replaced a combustion engine with a lithium-ion battery. So in the 2008 a UK customer can choose between:
For colours, choose between Orange Fusion, Cumulus Grey, Nimbus Grey, Nera Black, Pearl White, Vertigo Blue and Elixir Red. In terms of additional options add the 16” space saver from £165, the Peugeot Open and Go from £350 or the FOCAL premium sound from £590. There is a host of aesthetic improvements like the 18” alloy selection from upwards of £250.
How quickly can it charge? The 2008 is equipped with a 45.0 kWh lithium-ion battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 8.5 seconds, 93 mph top speeds and 100 kW (or 134 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 130 miles with warmer weather allowing for 180 miles.
On charging, the 7.4 kW AC max will allow 7 hour and 15 minute 0 – 100% charging times with the 100 kW DC maximum allowing 26 minute 10 – 80% times. The stated Vehicle Fuel Equivalent is 139mpg and the cargo volume is 434L, making this an efficient but practical family option. In terms of charging cost, 0 - 100% on a standard domestic tariff will be around £15, which is an equivalent cost per mile of 10 pence.
The electrified SUV has the style and refinement which the Stellantis group have brought to the brand, effectively lifting this from the cheaper and more budget brand it was seen as. But selling this against a Hyundai Kona, Kia Niro EV, Vauxhall Mokka-e and MG ZS is not an easy task.
Affordable SUVs, with adequate range and charging speeds are no longer a rarity, so each manufacturer will have to ensure their product is more closely reviewed. Prices, while having increased during 2022 for EVs, are still closely considered and monitored by UK motorists.
And if car producers want to register units they do need to ensure they are firmly attuned to the market. In terms of the automotive media and press, CarWow are at 7/10, What Car? are at 4/5, TopGear 7/10 and Auto Express at 4/5. Most reviews point towards the comfortable drive, peppy performance and exciting looks. However, the 7kW AC standard charging speed falls short of the 11kW AC now appearing on many cars and the overall range is not quite as competent as the South Korean product.
