After recent SMMT data showed just how popular EVs really are, see our ev review and with used EV prices now stabilising, if not increasing ) we are on the precipice of making some serious in-roads into the electrification project.
Confidence in the second-hand market is essential if the new car market is to flourish with ex-lease and PCP options needing to be rehomed after 2, 3 or 4 years.
While traditionally the technology was somewhat questionable (range and charging), the modern product is anything other than unworkable and customers can benefit from some amazing deals. Confidence in the fuel type is essential though and this stems from new media and automotive outlets; the anti-EV agenda which was clearly propagated by pro-Oil companies has not been particularly useful. But with key figures now taking action and addressing this situation, more honest and balanced information can be presented to the potential customers.
One of the brands at the heart of Britain’s transitionary process, MG, have been somewhat busy in 2023. Having already launched their MG4 hatchback in a standard and long range format, including the Trophy specification, the Chinese brand added two more key options for customers to lease or buy in 2023.
The first was a true hot hatch and iconic performance EV - the xPower. And the second was a bigger battery hatchback - the Extended Range. As at August 2023, both cars are now ready to order (and take delivery of) with all of our data now properly inputted via our partners at EVDB.
The new long distance option is a solution to a big obstacle facing some drivers, particularly high-mileage company car users, which is the range. Some customer simply want to charge at home or work without stopping at a service station or rapid charge point for an interim top-up.
The Trophy Extended Range will have the same amazing specification as the other models, with 360 degree camera, wireless phone charger, navigation, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, mobile phone as key, Apple CarPlay, 10.25” colour screen and reverse parking sensors.
But as an EV, the Extended Range really performs. The RWD model has a 74.4 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 6.5 seconds, 112 mph top speeds and 180 kW (or 241 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 220 miles with warmer weather allowing for 300 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 8 hour 0 – 100% charging times with the 135 kW DC maximum allowing 41-minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 363L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 144 mpg. You cannot tow with this EV. It also has V2L capabilities, with the Type 2 adapter allowing up to 2.2 kW AC output. As you will tell from our guide to the longest range EVs - the new Extended Range is now one of the most robust hatchbacks to lease in the UK.
For some customers, being able to cover 250 miles+ on a full charge just isn’t necessary. With the average mileage for our electric car leasing customers at around 10,000 per annum, this means that daily requirements are often no more than 20-40 miles. So some customers are more concerned with the vehicle performance and aesthetics, so long as the basic requirements are in place.
With the performance MG4 offering smart all-wheel drive, launch control, track mode display, advanced braking performance, you can tell the engineers want fun to be high up on the list. And with other great features like LED lights, two-tone black roof, privacy glass, electrically folding mirrors, leather steering wheel, metal sports pedals, 3D sound and 18” alloys, this is a car with an abundance of specification.
The AWD model has a 61.7 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 3.8 seconds, 124 mph top speeds and 320 kW (or 429 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 170 miles with warmer weather allowing for 225 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 8 hour 0 – 100% charging times with the 135 kW DC maximum allowing 41-minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 363L is available with this car.
It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 131 mpg. You cannot tow with this EV. It also has V2L capabilities, with the Type 2 adapter allowing up to 2.2 kW AC output. In our ultimate EV comparison guide, you will note that the MG4 is now one of the UK’s fastest EVs on acceleration .
While the growth and popularity of MG is not surprising to us at e-car lease, for many customers they are surprised at how robust and technologically proficient this brand now is. As you will have seen, many well established combustion brands are now struggling to match them on price, technology or competence.
