The new MG4 EV XPOWER Lease - is this the hottest hatch in the UK?

Fresh off 6 months of success with their current line-up, it was a little surprising when the MG brand teased the UK with yet another version of this small family hatch. At the moment, UK leasing customers can enjoy one of three incredible versions including:

• 125kW SE EV 51 kWh Auto;
•  150kW SE EV Long Range 64 kWh Auto; and
•  150kW Trophy Long Range 64 kWh Auto

So why would MG tease yet another version or variant?

Well the curtain has finally been pulled back on this, with the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed acting as the host for the latest option from the Chinese brand -  the MG4 320kW EV XPOWER 64kWh 5dr Auto.

Underpinned by the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), the key difference with this model is that it will have dual motor configuration which enables some considerable speed and performance. Additional technical and engineering upgrades include the new Dynamic Cornering Control system with electronic differential and Motor Control, which allows torque vectoring between all wheels.

With the added performance, the EV does have an increase in suspension stiffness and recalibrated braking regeneration. But to ensure safety, there will be upgrade ventilated 345mm discs and Bridgestone Turanza tyres.

In terms of specification (above the Trophy), consider the two-tone black roof, upgraded 18” alloys, new Racing Green colour plus polished accents.

And how does the new MG4 xPower  perform - what are the pros / cons? 

In terms of data the 61.7 kWh lithium-ion battery will offer 0 – 62 times of 3.8 seconds, 99 mph top speeds and 320 kW (or 429 hp). This model is a RWD option. Expect a combined winter range of 170 miles with warmer weather allowing for 230 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 6 hour and 45 minutes 0 – 100% charging times with the 135 kW DC maximum allowing 34 minute 10 – 80% times. A small hatchback / city-car, this has a limited cargo volume of 363L and vehicle fuel equivalent of 134 mpg. This EV cannot tow.

In terms of the Pros

This is one of the quickest EVs in the UK and undoubtedly the best all-electric hot-hatch. The car is spacious for the family, even though it is a “small” options. A reasonable 200 mile real world range does mean it is practical still.

On Cons 

The top speed of 99mph may put off the keenest of motor performance fans. And the interior is a little bland compared to other options.
