Could you or your business benefit from our new VW ID7 Lease Deal - Is it the perfect EV for you
The ZEV Mandate is still in place for the UK, which means that for 2025 manufacturers in the UK must achieve at least 28% zero-emission registrations on their new cars. While combustion options, petrol and diesel, remain fundamental to many brands, there has to be an err of caution with how lithium technology is approached.
While 2024 saw no formal fines or penalties from the UK Government, the same cannot be said moving forwards. There are inclinations that fines of up to £15,000 per non-compliant registration will be imposed if this isn’t made a priority. While the Government have suggested that other measures like factory or infrastructure investment, will be considered as part of their analysis, the threat of financial consequence should be enough to sharpen the minds of the senior management.
However, the UK is not alone in its ambitions to go green. As reported in the BBC today the Norwegians have been hard at work in making their automotive economy a pure electric one. A populous of just over 5.5 million people, the Nordic citizens are adopting battery technology unlike any other. In 2024, nearly 89% of new cars in Norway were EV; a sizeable upsell from the 20% in the UK.
With a mix of taxation measures on combustion, and support for greener and cleaner systems, the systematic and cultural changes have resulted in mass-adoption. Even small perks like free parking, discounted tolls and use of bus lanes have helped build the confidence in the platform. Carrot and Stick measures must follow in the UK, especially for personal customers (retail market) if we are to follow suit. The success in Norway does at least prove that the ambitions of 2030 in the UK are achievable.
One brand pushing their way into UK households going electric in 2025 is the Volkswagen Group. With VW, Cupra and Skoda, the UK leasing market is blessed with three solid options. In 2024, it was VW, with their ID.3 hatch, ID.4 SUV and ID.5 SUV Coupe which were fundamental. Indeed, these were some of the best-selling EVs we had during 2024.
Unquestionably, battery technology has been a crucial aspect to the German car makers, which may be a direct response to rising competition from Chinese and South Korean brands. 2023-2024 has seen more significant responses to the growing East Asian automotive sector. Economies of scale, mature markets and more significant investment has seen brands like MG, BYD, Skywell and GWM Ora arrive across Europe to the detriment of more established brands.
While more punitive importation levies have been imposed to try to create more price parity, there is at least pressure on familiar products to future-proof their offering. Price point is a key aspect to a successful BEV but there are other elements like range, charging capability, ergonomics and practicality which will form part of the overview.
This may be why the VW group introduced the ID.7 last year (2024), so to provide the fleet market, and personal customers, with a Passat equivalent driving solution.
