Read (or watch) any news, automotive media or social media feed on electrification of the UKs car and van fleet and you quickly get a sense of mixed opinion. The difficulty for those businesses looking into EVs for the first-time, is that there are a swathe of opinions either supporting or critiquing battery tech for vehicles.
Since 2020, and the watershed which was COVID, the move towards zero-emission transport has proceeded at an unbelievable rate with even the most “pro” of EV campaigners astounded by the sudden increase in supply / demand. But this has been amidst conjecture from external parties alleging EVs are bad for the environment, their range is mis-leading / insufficient and that electric transport is a route to maintain and control the populous.
So much so, the leading electric vehicle medium, Fully Charged, have recently started a #StopBS campaign to fightback against incorrect information and overwhelmingly bias negativity on electric transport.
Regardless of the recent press, today (19 July 2023) more good news was released for the UK’s EV economy with Tata confirming an electric car battery production facility in Somerset. As reported in the BBC, around 4,000 jobs are set to be created with this new Gigafactory set to be one of the biggest in Europe.
In further news, this means that Jaguar Land Rover will have access to batteries for vehicles like the Range Rover, Defender and I-Pace from around 2026.
With only one battery production factory in the UK, based in Sunderland, there have been concerns the Government and automotive businesses have been somewhat tentative to the net zero goals and British infrastructure was lacking compared to the rest of the world.
While one factory will only do so much for the UK, this does mark a seismic £4 billion investment into the EV economy and helps provide more support to manufacturers. And we are not immune from the fact that Land Rover represents the UK’s luxury SUV market to the highest standards, with their Range Rover (full size) and Range Rover Sport being some of the most desirable options to lease or buy.
While the prestige SUVs and crossovers will be popular among those with a healthy budget, it doesn’t always bode well for those personal or business customers with a budget. As at 2023, the demand for some all-electric options has curtailed due to the higher prices being charged by manufacturers.
The result is a slower, and more steady demand, with many now having to turn towards the leasing broker network to help push some deals and offers through. And the future is not all going to be luxury cars, with a host of more affordable cars like the Fiat 600e, MG4 EV Long Range, BYD Dolphin and Volvo EX30 due to the UK later in 2023.
The good news is that manufacturers do recognise the changing environment and conditions, so are now changing their product line-up and price points. But this is all from a backdrop of robust and thorough investment; as noted above production facilities and infrastructures costs billions of pounds to build and create, so there needs to be ample return. This is no more so imperative if the 2030/2035 ambitions for net zero targets are to be achieved.
But cars like the Cupra Born are key to the electric movement. With many smaller business and fleets moving from traditional combustion formats (petrol or diesel) and into lithium-ion tech, there are clear requirements for more cost-effective solutions - no deposit flexibility, manageable rentals and robust maintenance programmes for example.
Many of the early EVs were very much big car (big cost) focused, which left some businesses somewhat concerned about making the jump. But with the electric Born, Cupra recognised the need to offer both value and choice to their customers, with their 3 battery platforms:
To help simplify, the Cupra brand will offer 3 “versions, known as V - the choices include:
The colour choices include Aurora Blue, Glacier White, Geyser Silver, Rayleigh Red and Vapor Grey.
In terms of the car shown, the Cupra Born Electric Hatchback 169KW e-Boost V3 77kwh 5 door Auto Pure Electric Vehicle, this is based on the following configuration:
