The Fisker Ocean Electric SUV - the UK’s first deliveries take place

One of the most hotly anticipated EVs of 2023 is without doubt the Fisker Ocean. Led by the Danish engineer Henrik Fisker, this brand has managed to almost instantly create the “Tesla” profile, with many customers waiting years to secure their Ocean.

And this is against a background of delays and small failures, as the brand has struggled to really get mass-production cars into the fleet and retail markets. But with significant investment behind the company, including the actor Leonardo DiCaprio, the faith in the organisation has almost certainly paid off. And for the European market, a mid-sized crossover Ocean was the designated vehicle, after the car’s official announcement in 2020 by Fisker Automotive.

With the boom, or catalyst, years for UK around 2019 - 2020, the thought of an alternative Tesla product in an SUV format was very welcome indeed (bear in mind the Model Y only launched in 2021 / 2022).

While pre-orders on the Ocean began in 2020, the significant demand did not necessarily produce any physical goods, with 2023 set as the designated date for vehicle deliveries in the UK. As we approached our final quarter (October - December) there was a concern that the Fisker Ocean would very much be a car for 2024 and beyond.

But with Denmark enjoying their first deliveries in May 2023 and June 2023 for the first US deliveries, the announcement of an official store at Westfield London  was clear intent that we would not have to wait TOO long to enjoy this option.

And their first right-hand side vehicles made their way into the UK this month (October 2023) with a small amount of customers enjoying the Ocean One. And with the CEO Henrik confirming more Ocean Ones due this year, with the Extreme to follow shortly, this is welcome news to the eager personal and business customers awaiting their new lease!

So far, the Ocean One is sold out on the Fisker website but the options on this and the Extreme are pretty much the same for specification (and price). The biggest seller in the UK is most likely to be the Extreme and this will include some amazing features - SolarSky Roof, 3 drive modes, 17.1” central screen, digital rear view mirror, Fisker Pulse Audio, SmartTraction, Boost Mode, Front/Rear heated seats, Limo Mode and Find My Fisker.

The revolutionary “SolarSky” roof is a nifty solar roof which can provide between 1,500 - 2,000 miles of driving each year (sunshine dependent!). The Smart Traction enables torque distribution throughout the all-wheel drive system. And the Limo Mode allows the second row passengers to have a personalised experience via a separate touchscreen control and reclining seats. Not unlike the competition, the over-the-air updates means new features and technology are sent directly to your new EV.

But which battery option is best with the Fisker?

The remaining three options to choose from will include:

•  Ocean Sport - the FWD SUV will have a 75 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 7.4 seconds, 99 mph top speeds and 205 kW (or 275 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 200 miles with warmer weather allowing for 270 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 8 hour and 15 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 200 kW DC maximum allowing 33 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 476L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 127 mpg. This option can tow 1090kg (braked). This EV will have no Bidirectional charging;
•  Ocean Ultra - the AWD SUV will have a 106.5 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 4.2 seconds, 124 mph top speeds and 400 kW (or 536 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 280 miles with warmer weather allowing for 375 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 11 hours and 30 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 250 kW DC maximum allowing 35 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 476L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 125 mpg. This option can tow 1820kg (braked). This EV will have no Bidirectional charging; and
•  Ocean Extreme - the AWD SUV will have a 106.5 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 3.9 seconds, 127 mph top speeds and 420 kW (or 563 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 280 miles with warmer weather allowing for 375 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 11 hours and 30 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 250 kW DC maximum allowing 35 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 476L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 125 mpg. This option can tow 1820kg (braked). This EV will have no Bidirectional charging. 

But will the Fisker Ocean be the best SUV EV to lease?

With some admirable range, charging capability and performance statistics, this robust family crossover will tick many of the boxes for UK drivers. However, the Ocean is not without competition with the Tesla Model Y and Polestar 3 also in production.

And with the Ford Mach-E, Skoda Enyaq, VW ID.4 plus the cheaper BYD ATTO 3 and MG ZS EV, you do soon quickly realise that this is a robust market. Every brand will need to offer great service, competitive discounts and support leasing customers otherwise another brand is likely to step in and do the same.
