The Ford Puma electric lease deal is live

Our latest electric car lease deal is live - The Ford Puma EV

The UK is currently trying to make sense of some of the content from the Government’s big announcement on the phasing out of combustion vehicles in the UK.

While the UK reported some 381,000 electric vehicle sales in 2024 (the highest in Europe) the political powers are clearly aware of the conjecture and opinion which surrounds this transition. It is not a secret that trade unions, manufacturers, news and media outlets plus the general public have been outspoken with criticism on how this process has been engineered.

Indeed there have been a myriad of concerns around vehicle suitability, price, the used-car market, charging infrastructure and UK manufacturing which are at the heart of EV uptake (or reticence to). As the report suggests, from 2030 cars will need to be either a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or zero-emission in order to be sold in the UK. Further, any new car or van being sold from 2035 will have to be zero-emission.

Described as “the world’s most ambitious decarbonisation measure” the shift in direction and flexibility is clearly a response to the investment and economics. More clarity on the ZEV Mandate has also been proffered, with target pathways for manufacturers now adjusted to ensure that credits can be more easily moved.

The change in compliance payments from £15,000 to £12,000 are further indications of stakeholder engagement from the Government.

Another key alteration has been the exemption of all micro vehicle manufacturers (MVMs), small vehicle manufacturers (SVMs), special purpose and kit vehicles from the requirement to end the sale of pure combustion vehicles. For more information on this key change to electric car and van sales in the UK head to the UK Government website.

A brand which has so far found it difficult to make a big impact in the EV world is the Ford group. We don’t mean this to be critical or negative; the reality is that they haven’t possessed a top-seller for a pure EV against other manufacturers such as Tesla, BMW or Volkswagen.

In part, this has been down to their limited vehicle choice, with the Mustang Mach-E being the only foremost proposition (in the SUV segment). However, the group used 2024 to be somewhat more proactive, with the Explorer (Small SUV) and Capri (liftback saloon) both making their way to the UK market.

However, for a manufacturer which has essentially built volume on their Fiesta and Puma, the absence of any real alternative in an all-electric format has been to their detriment. With the commencement of 2025, Ford have now confirmed that this was being rectified via their Puma EV, which has been called the “Gen-E”.

If you want to get a new Puma, then you would head to the e-car website and use our instant quote calculator / EVC™ certificates to proceed. With a new car, the advantage is that the vehicle has not been used by anyone else, so you receive a vehicle in esteem condition.

As a new EV, you benefit from the full manufacturer and battery warranty, which gives you that piece of mind that if anything goes wrong you can revert to the manufacturer, via franchised dealership, to correct any issues or faults.

For UK drivers, moving into new cars (under contract hire) is about enjoying a safer and more risk averse process, where the various potential issues with vehicle ownership / usership are removed. Plus you benefit from the latest technology, battery performance and aesthetics. But for some personal customers, the used car market is still their preferred route forwards and this has been an interesting aspect for EVs.

Purchasing a used EV invoked a number of pitfalls, many of which have been communicated to the Government in light of the ZEV Mandate changes. Residual values have been uncertain, confidence in battery warranties and health coupled with charging infrastructure for those vehicles with lesser range are commonly propagated.

Part of this is down to the finance products - hire purchase and contract purchase - which do have certain drawbacks compared to contract hire This is why our used-EV lease programme for personal customers have become more popular with a sister-company CarLease. With 18 month - 48 month contracts on ex-fleet EVs, there is an ability to use and return the vehicle, with no risk of depreciation or shortfall; at contract end the vehicle will be collected by the finance company.

To promote confidence in these vehicles, the finance company has included a funder-maintained package, which means all servicing, maintenance, tyres (including punctures) and breakdown recovery are included for the duration. So if you do want to try an EV and don’t fancy paying a premium for a new vehicle, try our used electric leasing team!
