The Porsche Taycan Lease Deal - is this the best performance EV?

The Porsche Taycan Lease Deal

Our Porsche Taycan leasing offer - is this the best performance EV?

The electric car market has been undoubtedly up and down during 2023; news and media outlets have been pushing good news, bad news and anything in the middle. Let’s cut to it, there are agendas on all sides and there seems to be a hybrid environment of facts, fiction and fantasy.

As one of the UK’s first electric car leasing brokers / car sales company’s, we have faced this conundrum on a fairly regular basis, moving through customer concerns and queries on the EVs, the infrastructure and the lifestyle as a whole.

But with the 2030 / 2035 zero emission plans  hot on political and economic agendas, there are concerns about how ready the UK is in order to move towards purely electric transport with cars, vans and HGVs now all under the microscope. Only recently (late July 2023) it seemed that our Prime Minister - Mr Rishi Sunak - was considering moving away from this plan. Indeed, it was reported that there was more emphasis on granting oil and gas drilling licences, than there was on investing into new and used EV solutions as part of creating a sustainable plan.

But in July 2023, it seemed that the UK’s enthusiasm is continuing for EV’s, with some considerable improvements in new car registrations. As reported in the SMMT  there are some fascinating headlines on battery tech, with pure electric cars accounting for 23,010 registrations (16% of the total), which is some growth of 87.9% compared to July 2022.

The total number of new electric cars registered in 2023 now is a total of 175,978, which is some 38% more than the same time last year. And with more time to sell before the year’s end, we could see 250,000 - 300,000 new EVs registered in 2023.

These are some amazing statistics for new electric cars but in the charge point world, more good news can be enjoyed, with Zap Map reporting some 1999 new charge point installed including 325 rapid and ultra-rapid points. As  Zap Map set out, we now have 45,737 charge points in some 26,508 locations  But with a target of 300,000 chare points but 2030, the next 7 years are going to be busy for all those involved at infrastructure level.

And the move to EV isn’t just about green cars and pro-environmental choices (although these should be a paramount consideration), In our EV car comparison  you will note some fairly exciting performance metrics on a wide array of cars; indeed there are a plethora of vehicles which can reach 62 mph in less than 5 seconds and not just the obvious ones.

For the combustion world, these statistics would lead to the vehicles being referred to as supercars or truly exciting performance options. But one manufacturer, which was an early adopter to electric performance, is still considered as the market leader - Porsche.

While there are some notable comparisons on the list such as the Tesla Model S, the upcoming Lotus Eletre R, the Audi e-tron GT RS, the Kia EV6 and even the MG4 Xpower, the Taycan is really the epitome of options exuding finesse, confidence and quality.

The first car to use an 800 volt system with thermal management, the German team recognised that it isn’t just about the aesthetics or the styling, but that EV drivers need a robust charging speed, pragmatic range and convenient charging infrastructure.

Looking at the top of the line Turbo S Saloon (at nearly £150,000), this 751hp option allows for top speeds of 162mph and 2.8 second 0-62 mph times. However, this still allows for a real world range of 270 miles, AC charging at 22 kW AC (for sub 5-hour 0-100% charging times) and 268 kW DC rapid charge capabilities (15 minute 10-80% charging times). And not only can you charge at any Porsche dealership, but the group are also looking to invest in bespoke charging stations throughout the UK.

But are all customers going for new electric cars like the Porsche?

What happens to these vehicles after the contract ends? As contract hire is a usership based product, the vehicles must be returned at contract cessation.

This means that the customer, personal or business, cannot purchase the vehicle. In reality, the used-EVs end up in auctions throughout the UK where they will be purchased by car supermarkets and garages for re-sale. However, you will note that Porsche UK also sell pre-owned and Porsche approved options so that you can enjoy a stock option. But type into Google - “used electric car lease” and you will see that some companies are now offering pre-owned vehicles on lease or shorter-term subscriptions, at a considerable discount.

One of the driving forces behind this has been the topsy-turvy prices for pure electric vehicles, with the used car network trying to establish a procurement or sales strategy. In the absence of any grants, support or incentives for retail customers, the transition to zero-emission has not been without problems in this market segment.

For finance companies sending ex-lease vehicles to auction, there is an overriding nervousness about what these cars will fetch compared to their anticipated RVs. And while this may seem important on the surface, if it isn’t corrected then the new car industry will be impacted. Cheap leasing relies on a robust RV and re-sale; without this, none of us can progress.
