The Volkswagen group have been busy during March 2024, releasing a litany of products and options for their electric car fans to enjoy. This is amidst some poignant news where European manufacturers are starting to identify problems in relation to Chinese manufacturers of EVs which are coming into the EU (and UK) and which are diluting their market share.
Much of the world’s lithium-ion battery production is coming out of China and many of their bigger brands have made their way into our market already. With vehicle producers like BYD, GWM and MG (SAIC) already recognised as some of the best all-electric brands, it is not surprising to see a kick back. As the FT reported the French brand, Renault, are asking for external funding to help vehicle manufacturers meet the 2035 go-zero deadlines.
Plus there is a discussion about the European Commission looking into reducing subsidies on Chinese cars or looking at higher import duties. But this friction could potentially move Chinese technology away from European brands, which could see them lose access to information sharing.
So to have VW, which are one of Europe’s best mass-market car makers, innovate and develop new options is pleasing to see. Having thrown their updated ID Buzz LWB 7-seater and GTX into the mix this week the confirmation of the ID.7 Tourer (estate) and GTX performance was also welcome news.
The ID.7 Tourer - “for greater freedom” according to the VW EV team, is centred around design and creativity coupled with spacious luggage compartment and practicality.
While many of the EVs to arrive In the UK have been a mix of SUV, Saloon and Performance models, the practical “estate” vehicle seems to have fallen by the wayside. Many of the best estates in electric format have only just been released in 2023 / 2024, with the MG5 EV as the only truly original option from 2020.
However, the BMW i5 tourer, Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo and Vauxhall Astra Tourer have become available to UK leasing customers for 2024. For the business and company car market, who are likely to have practical applications for these type of cars, the move towards more choice is clearly a welcome move.
But you could not describe the ID.7 as old-fashioned or boring, with these great-looking options ready to compete with the likes of the BMW and Porsche EV product.
Some of the key features include massaging seats with ergoative premium and seat air conditioning, enhanced space and luggage capacity solutions, smart glass panoramic roof, electric towing brake and IDA voice assistant. The ID.7 Tourer launched this week (22 March 2024) and became available to price in the leasing market. And so far the options include:
The Match Pro will include 19” alloys, 15” screen with navigation, augment reality HUD, area view and rear view camera, keyless access, climate control, massage seats in front, privacy glass, easy open and close pack plus a mode 3 (type 2) charging cable.
The additional options include an exterior plus pack (adaptive chassis, advanced lights, IQ.Lights, progressive steering and shock absorption), a swivelling towbar, an interior pack (Harmon Kardon sound, comfort seats, heated rear seats, lumbar support and ventilated seats) and the energy efficient heat pump (the system compresses refrigerant under high pressure to produce heat that is used to heat up flowing cold air.
This uses less energy from the battery for the high-voltage heater, beneficially delivering greater range over electric vehicles without heat pump).
Absolutely - VW confirmed the GTX would be made available for the new electric estate. This sport and dynamic option is all about VW reinvigorating what we think and feel about zero-emission driving. This includes the dual-motor all wheel drive system and instant punch you would expect.
Special features on the ID.7 include the distinctive bumper, GTX specific lights, 20” Skagen alloys and side sills. Inside the vehicle is individualised with red piping in seats, heated front seats, sports multifunction steering wheel and red decorative finish.
