Another SUV Coupe, or Liftback Saloon as it is officially known, is hitting the UK market - the Polestar 4. The Gheely-owned pure electric brand has already established their product as one of the key EVs in the UK with their Polestar 2 fastback / saloon being confirmed as the 7th best selling option in 2022 with some 7,345 registrations, falling just behind the Mini Electric and Nissan Leaf.
With the build quality and safety of a Volvo, coupled with more eccentric and exciting aesthetics, this is an exciting alternative to the Tesla Model 3 (which was coincidently the 2nd best-seller with 19,071). While Volvo have been very much SUV and 4x4 centric with their XC40 and EX90, the Polestar brand seemed to be moving in a slightly different direction.
But, having launched their Polestar 3 SUV estate in 2022 and now the 4 SUV Coupe for 2024, it seems that a mixed fleet is the future of this brand.
Where this latest deal is likely to be more popular is with the business leasing and salary sacrifice customers who have been ordering pure electric car options with almost reckless abandonment. Companies engaged in leasing EVs on fleet, benefit from increased tax relief, in that they can claim back 100% of the rentals against corporation tax; unlike 51g/km+ cars which can only claim back 85% of the rental against corp tax.
And while 100% of all servicing and maintenance rentals can be reclaimed, the VAT element will be subject to your use of the vehicle but this will vary between 50 - 100% of the Vat element. And for any company offering employees charging on site, there is no private fuel tax on electricity in the same way as petrol or diesel. For the actual driver, the big win about EVs is that because they emit 0 g/km of CO2, the Benefit in Kind (or company car tax) is incredibly low.
For the current 2023-24 tax year, just 2% BiK applies which means that the driver will only pay a small amount in tax per month for enjoying a brand new EV. Equivalent petrol or diesel cars will cost hundreds of pounds per month in comparison. So the ability to save what is probably a mortgage payment for most UK drivers is somewhat alluring! But that doesn’t mean that personal customers cannot benefit from the joys of electric driving - it’s just that the same tax benefits to do not apply.
According to the Polestar website, you can keep up to date with the latest order and delivery times - but the press have been informed that early 2024 should see order banks open with deliveries likely to occur around Spring. Customers in China will be able to enjoy this first with the EV being built there.
And we do expect this to be somewhat popular with UK customers, as coupe-style SUVs do garner positive attention with that practicality of load-carrying and driving position coupled with the style and aesthetics. What is perhaps quite unique about the upcoming SUV, is that there will be no rear window, as this is replaced with a HD camera for wider field of vision. Interesting in theory but we aren’t sure how this will work in practice.
The car will enjoy a stretched panoramic roof to create that light and airy space which many drivers enjoy in the Tesla options. But the externals are where this car wins with a sleek but sporty profile, rear aero bladed and aggressive alloys. Inside, you can choose from an array of sustainable interiors such as Charcoal MicroTech, Mist Tailored knit, Zinc Nappa leather and Charcoal Nappa leather. And technology will be present on the Polestar 4 with a 10” driver display and 15” central screen plus a 14” projection area for the HUD ensuring this offers the height of infotainment functionality.
With the Single Motor at circa £55,000 and the Dual Motor at £60,000, we believe leasing deals will be priced in and around £500 - £800 per month term, annual mileage and initial rental dependent. This is not exactly going to be a cheap EV lease but if RVs and discounts remain competitive, this still may be affordable for some UK customers. Not unlike any car, there is a price point with every product and Polestar will need to stay on top of this.
Does it have a good range and charging times? So far two key battery configurations have been announced including:
