Your Definitive Guide to going electric with your new Hyundai

Are there enough charge points in the public network?
Your Definitive Guide to going electric with your new Hyundai

Going electric with your new Hyundai EV car lease

The move to electric transport is not reserved to just UK domestic households and company car fleets. Our private hire and taxi companies are also making the move into all-electric cars, and vans, especially with the onset of Clean Air Zones and other emissions-based charging to city and urban areas.

Using zero-emission vehicles in conurbations is a more sensible choice, with air pollution from our cars, vans and buses clearly polluting our congested areas which is leading to poorer living conditions and respiratory issues. In a recent BBC report  the Uber boss Dara Khosrowshahi suggested that more customers should be prioritising electric car options, even if this is likely to cause them a small delay compared to a combustion derivative.

Indeed, the Uber boss credited the Chinese car manufacturers for producing high-quality and affordable EV options for the UK and called on the Government to push the ZEV Mandate from 2035 to 2030, in-keeping with the original ban on petrol and diesel car options.

Uber are now offering UK customers the “green ride” as part of their ride, which is helping the brand to keep to its 2040 zero-emission ambitions. In London it is now thought that 1/3 of all Uber drivers have invested in a pure EV, which is bigger than the 20% in Madrid or Paris.

To make this happen he wants to ensure that Uber drivers are offered affordable car options (new or used) and also a robust charging infrastructure which allows their high-mileage demographic to confidently and efficiently charge their Uber vehicle.

High on many UK customers agenda, personal or business, is the South Korean Hyundai brand which has been well utilised by the Uber and taxi community. One of the early mass-adoption brands for all-electric tech, the Hyundai group brought solutions like the Ioniq saloon and Kona to the UK many years ago. Indeed, the Ioniq is one of the most well-utilised EV's to buy or lease as at 2024.

The group have very much been investing in their battery tech, with a real concentration on a robust battery offering range, performance and charging capabilities. Indeed, the options shown here - the Hyundai IONIQ 6 Long Range 2WD - is capable of an amazing 233kW DC rapid charging.

What is pretty important when you lease, or buy, an EV is that you do understand the rapid charging capability for use in the public network. For high-mileage drivers, using motorway services and destination chargers, the charging capability is essential. The old adage of “charge while you have a cup of coffee” is really contingent on 1) the charging rate on your vehicle; and 2) the charger you are connecting to.

Not all vehicles are built equally, and while the average DC charging capability on our website is 165kW DC, there are big divergences with some vehicles able to do 300kW DC+ whereas others are in and around 100kW DC. While the usable battery will be determinative of the time taken to charge your vehicle, the charging capability is nevertheless crucial too. Your car’s ability is limited by the charge point it is connected to. For example, if you use a 50kW DC charger and your vehicle is capable of 250kW DC, then a 50kW peak is your best outcome.

However, having enough destinations to charge your Hyundai at is clearly a useful facet. Some press and media would want you to believe that charging is difficult if not impossible. Even our Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband, recently spoke about the state of the UK’s charging infrastructure, lamenting that more needed to be done to ensure customer confidence. In response to this, our charge point location partners Zap Map have produced some great responses on the state of our charging network.

In one article the group have discussed how 200 additional 150kW+ charge points have been installed at motorway services since January 2024. Nearly 50% of the 114 motorway services in England have 6 or more 150kW charging facilities and many now have faster 250 - 350 kW options too. This is what Zap Map define as an ultra-rapid facility, with a 50kW-149kW option defined as being rapid.

Plus the Zap Map stats for September 2024 are looking positive too   with 2,161 new EV devices installed; but with a mix of slow / fast / rapid and ultra-rapid connections. Using the Zap Map app, you can see your own locality pretty much straight away.
