The growth of electric cars in the UK is now unquestionable. Many manufacturers are on the 2nd (or 3rd) revision of their vehicles, with battery, functionality and aesthetics all being updated. What is probably not recognised is that the momentum for new cars is fuelling the growth, and hopefully demand, of used electric vehicles.

This is something which is still being debated in the USA, with the recent BBC report discussing the growth of electrification across vehicle manufacturers and used-EV appetites. Not unlike combustion vehicles, the UK’s auctions and 2nd hand vehicle market is crucial to the new car industry and the residual values of the leasing broker industry.

As the article suggests, there are businesses like Uber which help support this industry, with cost-effective and environmentally friendly solutions needed for inner city transportation. But, in the more wider used market, the availability and choice of product is not in itself enough to help the transition. As per the UK, the BBC report suggests that “education is key for EV adoption” with elements like chargers, public charging facilities, range and maintenance costs needing to be discussed.

Aspects like battery warranty and after-market services and repair also need to be on the agenda. And getting this right is so key to the success of us hitting our ZEV mandate targets and forging strong relationships between customer and manufacturer. With more fantastic products, like the new Born VZ, on route, the used market is something which needs a clear and focused strategy.

What has changed with this EV?

The upcoming VZ, or “Veloz”, is Cupra’s enhancement to their popular Born hatchback. As our battery and performance overview below sets out, the Cupra group have focused on the powertrain technology, making this 40% more powerful than the existing Boost model. With 545Nm of torque, this is a staggering 75% increase on their initial product!

But dynamics and vehicle response have also been attended to with new DCC sports suspension, responsive steering and robust rear brakes.

New braking technology is designed to make the vehicle feel more safe and responsive with the new dampers and springs pushing the smooth driving experience. But it isn’t just about the performance, there will be two new colours - Dark Forest and Midnight Black  - as well as two new 20” alloy sets to choose from. The sportier exterior is reminiscent of the Golf R / Audi S3 and BMW M135i days.

Inside, the sports feeling will increase, with the ergonomic bucket seats (found in the Formentor and CUPRA Leon too). The upcycled SEAQUAL yarn textile will also be utilised. An additional Sennheiser immersive sound system will offer a 10-speaker high-fidelity sound experience.

This allows inside performance and enjoyment to match that of the vehicle. Smart light technology will be standard with every Cupra VZ, as well as full-LEDs throughout. Safety and convenience are key features of this Model, such as the Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Assist to create a semi-autonomous driving experience. The Remote Park Assist means that you can use a smartphone to manoeuvre the car, with the Trained Parking Assist able to copy regular parking spots and take over the control of the vehicle.

The Top View Camera offers a 360 degree view of the vehicle and the surrounding environment. Driver convenience is very much a priority with key features like the Side Assist to protect against blind spots, the Front Light Assist to automatically control headlight functionality and the Road Sign Display to interpret traffic and speed signs.

How does the Cupra VZ perform?

This has a usable battery of 79 kWh which offers 240 kW (322hp), top speeds of 99 mph and 0-62 times of 5.7 seconds. Real-world ranges suggest a combined 240 miles in colder weather with warmer temperatures to allow for 330 miles (on a full charge).

The 11kW AC allows for 0-100% charging times of 8 hour and 30 minutes with the 185kW DC enabling 10-80% in 30 minutes. The hot hatch has no Bidirectional charging. It has a 146 mpg equivalent, 385L cargo volume and offers no towing capacities. There is a heat pump on this EV.

When can I (or the business) order the new Cupra VZ lease? As per the Cupra  website the new Born EV will launch in the 3rd quarter of 2024. So expect leasing deals to land on our website around September 2024.
