The New the Cupra Tavascan Estate electric car lease Your Definitive Guide
When mass-adoption of new electric cars began, even the most educated and immersed EV businesses (like ours) did not consider just how crucial used-EV sales and leasing would be.
As at 2024, we have seen a number of issues in helping more UK customers access lithium-ion tech. Much of this has been about new propositions; facets like range, charging times, charging infrastructure and practicality. Where we were probably a little lax was on the price and affordability, especially for consumers / retail customers who procure vehicles in the used markets.
With many of the new all-electric cars very much company car centric, these have price-ranges well in excess of £40,000, meaning that used vehicles were not exactly at the price point many customers needed them to be. Indeed, the residual values in the new industry have been inconsistent during 2024, as many finance companies underwent major revaluations due to problems at the auction.
As the UK becomes more familiar and accepting of BEVs there has been a noticeable confidence shift. The results are apparent, with the SMMT reporting a seismic increase in used-EV solutions selling at auction. For Q2 2024 2.5% of all used-EV sales were all-electric, which represents a 52.6% increase.
This translates to 46,773 EV sales between April and June 2024! Even the Telegraph which is a common source of EV cynicism noted these improvements, suggesting that used EVs will sell “when the price is right”. As per their article, the top 5 selling EVs include:
The growth in our used market is now so profound that other media and news articles are lamenting the condition of garages and labour to help fix our EVs. As reported in GB News there is a shortage of technicians capable of fixing our all-electric propositions, with a shortfall of around 3000 EV technicians.
However, we don’t see this as an issue; indeed this is a complimentary remark showing just how far, and fast, EVs are growing. Supply and demand will always drive our business enterprises. If we create enough demand for garages and technicians to work on electric vehicles, then more solutions will be invested in.
Functional used-EVs are of course linked to the new types of vehicles coming through from manufacturers, as these effectively need to satisfy the used customers of the future. One key brand to this is Cupra, who have really been influential in the UK’s car industry over the last 2 -3 years.
An off-shoot of Seat, their aggressive styling and concentration on aesthetics have made their petrol product incredibly desirable. In the all-electric world, their Born hatchback has been very popular; in fact it has been a more desirable option than the VW ID3 (which is the donor vehicle). While the Born has recently received an update, we were eagerly awaiting a new product from the Cupra team to build on this success.
Having been rumoured in 2019 / 2020, the C-Segment SUV Tavascan was officially announced in April 2023. However, it is only in August 2024 that this exciting SUV has started to appear at roadshows and become available for the UK market to enjoy.
The “self-expression embodied” EV will offer a credible alternative to the likes of the VW ID5, Nissan Ariya and the Peugeot e-3008. The illuminated Cupra logos on the front and rear will give this a more distinctive look with the futuristic interior adopting a Y-bone console and bucket seats. Safety is not amiss with the adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane assist plus, assist lane changing and trained park/remote park assist.
There will be two battery configurations to choose from including:
