The new Mercedes G-Class Electric Car Lease-Your definitive guide

Last week was a big news one for the electric car world, with the famous Beijing Motor Show of 2024 of the upcoming EVs which are coming to market over the next few years (with some as quickly as this year). But as exciting as these vehicles are, some contrary stories about the Chinese influence in the electric vehicle market are being propagated.

Only today (29 April 2024), the FT was discussing the need to impose significant tariffs, of around 50%, in order to minimise the alleged disruption . With the EU currently researching and reporting on this topic, there is expected to be a decision on tariffs to be made in the region of 15-30% on any Chinese built EVs.

While the FT report is somewhat condemning of this, believing that the Chinese automotive brands can afford to pay more due to economies of scale, any tariff imposition would be an interesting move. Especially when it comes to the UK and its apparently autotomy on matters of economics. As per the SMMT , zero-emission cars now make up 2.7% of all registered cars on the UK’s roads, which means we are now firmly on route to registering 1 million all-electric vehicles. The UK market is not one to ignore in this debate.

But moving away from some of the amazing Chinese product, it was the German automotive organisation, Mercedes, who stole the show with their latest all-electric development. The new G-Class EV, or G580 with EQ-Technology, was featured at the show and it is now officially live on the Mercedes website to order. From a pricey £180,000 (yes, it is nearly £200k!), the Edition One is available for UK leasing customers to configure and order. The introduction of a battery platform and infrastructure to the G-Class is not that surprising. The Merc team did rumour this some time ago with the concept EQC.

Having already enjoyed success with this model in the diesel format (G450d) and petrol format (G500 and G63), the rugged and all-terrain SUV has been a popular car for the UK’s rich and famous; indeed this has become the quintessential footballers car!

Not unlike the combustion options, the EV format will be preserving the same spirit and off-road ability which our customers so enjoy - “Geländewagen. Electrified.” Inside the car will boast premium materials and sheer elegance, with a whole host of ergonomic and aesthetic features.

But the SUV can still deliver in real-world scenarios, with the G-TURN allowing axis spins and the G-STEERING enabling precise turns. Challenging terrains are no match for the legendary G-Class; albeit in electric format. As per the website, the vehicle can deliver in water depths of up to 850mm, drive on 35 degree inclines (or 70% gradient) and glide over bumps and rocks with the 20.3 degree ramp angle.

But what specification does the new electric Mercedes G-Class Edition One have?

As you would imagine for the price tag, this EV will be pretty robust! As standard this has 20” alloys, Active Multicontour Seat Package, Ionisation of air pack, AMG Line finish (floor mats, sill protection and sill panels), Burmester 3D sound, Comfort Package (keyless-go, temperature controlled cupholder and wireless phone charging.

Heat-insulated dark tinted glass), Night Package (darkened maps and black radiator grille), side running boards, sliding sunroof, SUPERIOR Line interior (G-ROAR and Nappa leather instrument panel), ambient lighting, metallic paint MANUFAKTUR logo projection, memory function front seats, multifunction steering wheel in Nappa leather.

Off-road screen, Warmth Comfort Pack (heated steering wheel and windscreen), Nappa leather seats, dash cam, Engineering Pack (Assistance Package and Parking Package included), smartphone integration, URBAN GUARD, torque vectoring and ladder-type frame.

In terms of additional options, choose between the Opalite White Mango, Obsidian Black, Grey,  Opalite White Bright and South Seas Blue Mango (which is used on these images). One cool addition, is the charging cables at the rear door in replacement of the spare tyre which is usually housed here.

But how will the Mercedes G-Class electric perform?

This AWD SUV will have a 116 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 4.7 seconds, 112mph top speeds and 432 kW (or 579hp). Expect a combined winter range of 195 miles with warmer weather allowing for 245 miles – a 220 mile combined.

A cargo volume of 555L is available with this car (although this is 1990L with the seats reclined). It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 77 mpg.
