With 2024 looming, it comes as no surprise that many manufacturers are busy preparing the UK for new innovations and products, especially with January 2024 being the commencement date for the ZEV Mandate (making electric compulsory on a phased basis).
But with more options, like the new Scenic EV from Renault, coming through, the team at e-car are noticing that customers are even more intrigued to understand what makes the EV a good car and how they should appraise each one. Within the UK automotive sector, much of the data on any new car (including electric) will be based on testing standards called WLTP or Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure.
These are laboratory tests which are used to analyse the components of the vehicle like consumption, CO2 and pollutants. While the NEDC standards were previously used, under EU law there were changes made which stemmed from some high-profile scandals on vehicle data. For many customers choosing their next new car, the data provided will be crucial to their decisions whether this be consumption, emissions or performance. This is no different for an electric car.
Absolutely. Many manufacturers or dealerships will set out a WLTP range analysis on their websites and brochures so that customers can make a decision. With WLTP, the EV range is measured with the car travelling at 29mph in summer temperatures from 100% to 0%.
So while this can be adopted to compare one EV against another, it does need to be highlighted that laboratory conditions are not necessarily reflective of the real-world situations. As you can imagine, there are various elements which can impact the range of an EV - weather, driving speed, driving style and weight for example. When a customer is researching an EV this must be taken into account, especially where the range of the vehicle is so crucial (high-mileage leasing customers).
To assist our customers, the e-car lease website is clear that driving situations and temperature will impact what you can expect from the vehicle. Using our “living with your …” analysis, along with our innovative EVC™, you quickly understand the divergences based on the facets aforementioned.
Taking the new Renault Scenic as an example and you will see that on WLTP the range on a full charge is a considerable 388 miles. However, when you use a real-world analysis, this actually changes to around 215 miles on a motorway in colder climates or 445 miles in city conditions with warmer weather. This is without taking into account the weight (i.e. multiple passengers) or the acceleration / driving approach. Hence, base your research on this complete view, as opposed to snapshot headlines.
The new family BEV from Renault is nevertheless a potentially robust vehicle to consider. As at December 2023, three key specification options have been confirmed with:
Personalise your Scenic SUV with colours like the flame red, midnight blue, artic white and shadow grey. Add the colour contrast black roof for a more distinctive look.
This FWD SUV will have an 87 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 7.9 seconds, 106 mph top speeds and 160 kW (or 215hp). Expect a combined winter range of 255 miles with warmer weather allowing for 345 miles.
On charging, the 22 kW AC max will allow 4 hour and 45 minute 0 – 100% charging times with the 150 kW DC maximum allowing 40 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 545L is available with this car (although with the seats down it can go to nearly 1500L). It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 140 mpg.
This EV will have no Bidirectional charging. And the car will be able to tow 750kg (Unbraked) and 1100kg (Braked). To be clear, this is not a 7-seat option.
