The future of electric driving in the UK is looking incredibly bright for the UK’s personal and business leasing customers. The old adage “there’s not enough choice” when it comes to zero-emission transport no longer applies. But that isn’t to say that the EV ecosystem and infrastructure is perfect.
Quite frankly it isn’t and we have some distance to travel as a society, and economy, before there is a higher proportion of consumers and businesses more comfortable with the battery tech. Indeed, on 30 March 2023, our Government launched a key consultation for this, called the “ZEV Mandate”, which is being utilised to assist the UK to attain their net-zero ambitions
To ensure that amazing electric vehicles, like the new EV9 SUV, can be sold with confidence, the ZEV Mandate is based around incentives and commitment for ensuring that the UK’s EV market is successful, so much so that the 2030/2035 phasing out of combustion is scheduled to take place (it was rumoured that this would be amended).
This new policy will have legislative backing, under the Climate Change Act, with the ZEV Mandate coming into action from January 2024. In brief, manufacturers are going to have to vastly increase the percentage of Qualifying ZEVs they sell in the UK (with specific ratios / trajectories set out from 2024 - 2035).
And by a Qualifying ZEV, these cars must produce 0 g/km at the tailpipe, cover at least 120 miles on a full charge (WLTP) and offer a vehicle warranty of 3 years (or 60,000 miles) and a battery warranty of 8 years (or 100,000 miles). Manufacturers will be provided with additional “credits” for EVs used by car clubs or wheelchair accessible vehicles. The update also made some key notes about the public chargepoints in the UK, with the clear message being that the standards do need to improve:
The importance of consumer, and business, confidence cannot be underrated. The news and media articles from Christmas 2022 to recently have been inundated with negativity - the impact of cold weather on range, the lack of charge points, the cost of EVs or the availability of EVs.
While business lease and salary sacrifice are probably continuing with their transactions regardless of these frailties because of the overwhelming tax advantages, for personal lease and purchase customers in the retail market, they are more sensitive to this. But if we want new EVs to be affordable on lease, the residual values need to be strong and this is where the auction prices and retail confidence becomes so important.
What happens at the end of an EV lease is actually just as important as the initial sales itself. So if the Kia EV9 is to be competitive on a leasing deal, there needs to be a good used-car market ready to accept them!
The Kia product so far, with the Niro EV and EV6, have been overwhelmingly well received in the UK. As one of the first manufacturers to the UK’s EV revolution, you can be assured of a robust experience. We have no doubts this family 7 seater SUV will continue to promote the brand’s all-electric qualities.
This SUV will adopt their new E-GMP chassis and platform, which is a longer and flatter architecture for enabling a substantial 100 kWh battery setup. Even with this battery capacity, there will be a generous load capacity and the ability to utilise three seating rows. Updated systems and tech, like the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) technology is a move towards Level 3 autonomous driving.
And with complete mobile phone integration, you can charge, amend or warm your new Kia from anywhere. Kia will be using two key models with a standard EV9 and the GT-Line plus they will be adding new colours such as Light ,Air, Earth and Water.
