There have been a few positive announcements in the EV industry lately to combat some of the conjecture which is suggesting that EVs are maybe not the future solution that has been foretold. Indeed, the recent issues that Fisker has encountered, coupled with the onslaught of robust Chinese EVs, has made for ripe anti-EV headlines.
But on a more positive front, many manufacturers have been confirming their commitment and dedication to the all-electric market through the upcoming vehicle options which are due to launch over the next 12 months. One exciting, and luxury, option which has garnered plenty of attention is the upcoming Polestar 4 SUV Coupe, which will see Polestar bringing a suitable alternative to the Tesla Model Y within their product line-up.
For many company directors in the UK, the company car choice has been far more interesting since HMRC decided to change the taxation policies on these vehicles. Historically, many board members and senior management would have a significant quandary in what vehicle to run and how to finance it.
Because many petrol and diesel vehicles are subject to a more punitive taxation system under the Benefit-in-Kind rules (especially for higher value luxury cars with more prevalent emissions), some directors would look at other solutions like pickup trucks and vans (due to the beneficial tax treatment of commercial vehicles), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles or cash for car allowances.
With regards to the latter, there was a considerable increase in directors taking higher salaries in order to pay for a vehicle on a personal solution, such as a PCP or contract hire.
The philosophy is that the income tax payable on the additional salary (40%) is better overall for the employer and the employee, than the level of tax payable on the company car arrangement. Many atypical SUVs like the BMW X5, Range Rover Sport or Mercedes GLE would normally be carried out on these arrangements.
However, to support the pro-EV culture in the UK, our Government confirmed that zero-emission vehicles would be subject to an incredible tax arrangement when procured through a company car scheme or salary sacrifice scheme.
Because EVs have zero tailpipe emissions, the BiK was originally set at 0%; which effectively translated as a free company car! Fast forward to 2024 and there is still only a moderate 2% BiK payable for having an EV as your next business vehicle. In practical terms, this means a monthly income tax liability on the Polestar 4 for around £40 a month (vehicle and specification dependent).
When compared on a like for like comparison against a traditional combustion option, you are looking at savings of many hundreds of pounds per month in tax. And before the protagonists suggest there is a sacrifice or lack of choice with EVs, there perhaps needs to be more due diligence. Moderns EVs are bringing some incredible ranges, charging capabilities and performance aspects to UK drivers.
When you throw in facets like Bidirectional charging and the synergy with our homes, you see the true potential for this fuel type. Plus choice is no longer a reliable excuse; at e-car lease we now have over 1,000 different vehicles in all-electric format to review. This includes all derivatives like estates, SUVs, sports car and performance. The true difficulty is knowing which one is best for you or the company.
One electric-only manufacturer trying to win your business is the Polestar group. With a new sense of direction and identity since their partial separation from Volvo , this will be a distinct all-electric brand albeit with Volvo as their servicing and maintenance partners.
The new Polestar 4 is described as a “Performance SUV Innovative Coupe by the engineering team. With some similarities to the fastback Polestar 2, this model brings ride elevation and family functionality to the BEV market. One of the unique facets is the removal of a rear window and a replacement with a HD camera to improve both internal cabin space and rearward view / security.
Also interesting is the addition of liquid crystals in the electrochromic glass roof which ensures transparency or opaque in an instant. There will be 2 key battery options for customers to choose from including:
