Having cost-effective and affordable EVs is now crucial to the UK’s electrification project. Gone are the days when manufacturers would launch a litany of £50,000+ performance and luxury battery options, which seemingly benefitted business leasing / purchasing customers only (on tax).
Consumers and retail customers are a real concern for the electric car project, with affordability, reliability and usability all being questioned under these cultural motoring changes. At a local level some of this can be overcome by information and education.
For example, our local Warrington customers who are looking for an electric car, can utilise the Warrington Council’s guidance to help understand the changes in their area. A Local Transport Plan sets out key plans for ensuring that reliability and usability of BEVs is maintained through schemes like charging points and car clubs. As reported in January 2024, the Council are set to announce two providers to roll out and maintain a number of on-street charge points and hubs under a 15-year contract.
Using the LEVI scheme, which Warrington was successful in being awarded by the Government, March 2024 should see significant growth of facilities to charge throughout Warrington. And building on this good news is this week’s announcement of the new supermini electric car from the Renault Group. The “R5VOLUTION” is here!
The Renault 5 is an incoming car from the French manufacturer. Consistently France’s best-selling car, this pocket rocket was a seismic entry into the UK’s car market between 1972 - 1985. Many boy racers will remember the iconic Renault 5 Turbo, which was a modified turbocharged version with a body kit.
Producing some 160bhp, this was known for speed and thrills. So in 2021, when Renault released a concept R5 as part of their EV strategy, many car enthusiasts took notice. While the group had placed faith in the Zoe as their cheaper small EV, it has now been confirmed thar the Renault 5 E-tech will effectively replace this, along with an even-smaller Renault 4 (which is due in 2025).
The aesthetics and character of the new Renault 5 EV are truly reminiscent of its historic predecessor, aligning sharp and sporty features with a modern dedicated EV platform (AMPR SMALL). In short, this car looks great and can be produced more affordably than many other options. As we will discuss below, the Renault 5 is about to be one of the cheapest EVs to lease in 2024, bettered only by options like the new Dacia Spring .
The new 5 e-tech is now available on the Renault website - for UK customers to review and research. As can be seen, there will be two key battery configurations to choose from, and which we will discuss below, and funky range of colours of features to enjoy. Integrated Bidirectional charging (V2G and V2L) is a big step for an affordable EV and a feature which very much fits the political landscape on eco-tech and green pursuits.
The Pop Yellow and Pop green colour options are likely the most popular, especially with the ability to add a colour contrast Diamond Black roof. While we are still awaiting the full information, there are 3 trims confirmed for the UK including:

In terms of specification overview, the vent grille on the bonnet has been modernised with the inclusion of a charge indicator in the form of the 5. LED headlights will be standard with the vehicle, as will be the electric dashboard and two-tier structure. 18” alloys are standard on each car, although the Techno and Five trims will have slightly different variations.
Inside, the 5 Turbo seats have inspired a racing interior, with the addition of denim upholstery. This extends to the dashboard and panels in the case of the Techno. And the dual horizontal screen, including the central 10” instrument panel will provide the driver with all the key info. Google is in-built for those with a Techno and Five model.
Driver aids and technology is anything other than absent. The ADAS system will be adopted from the Scenic E-Etch, so that automatic emergency braking in reverse, front sensors, emergency lane keeping, rear sensors and rear passenger safe passenger exit are included.
The Active Driver Assist helps to work with the experience, with key features like an intelligent adaptive cruise control to assist with longer journeys. Hands-free parking assist and even a “safety coach”, to provide vehicle feedback to the driver based on the experience will also feature in this EV i.e. driver attention alert to keep drivers attune to the busy road. Real-time navigation and over 50 apps, this will immerse younger drivers into this modern take on a legendary icon.
So far, two battery options have been confirmed including:
With 3.92m in length, 1.77m in width and 1.5m in height, this is just 9cm shorter than the Clio and is actually some 6cm higher. Compact yet functional.
As per the group’s website, the first deliveries are expected to arrive with us around Q1 2025.
