While not available to order yet, Volkswagen have been making lots of noise recently (April 2023) about their upcoming executive saloon - the ID.7- which they believe represents the future of electric mobility for UK customers. With a focus on range, along with charging times, the German manufacturer are aiming to bring an EV to compare against other saloon EVs with the “best range” including the Mercedes EQE, Tesla Model 3, BMW i4 and Porsche Taycan.
With an enviable list of credible EV saloons competing against this upcoming electric option, it is clear that much will needed to be done in order to ensure this succeeds.
Price is very relevant on any new EV and it is something more manufacturers need to closely observe. While electric transport has grown in popularity, because the UK’s business lease and salary sacrifice segment has been so receptive to them, the price is still a consideration particularly for personal / retail consumers.
Without tax advantages, Vat savings and corporation tax incentives, many customers are simply comparing battery v combustion technology in a more simplified way. More specifically, identifying which is cheaper! And with the Id.7 aiming to cost around £53,000 - £56,000 (battery and specification dependent) we anticipate leasing prices for the new VW EV will be anywhere from £450 - £700 per month depending on the term, annual mileage and initial rental.
Much of the lease deal will depend more on the residual value, or RV, of the saloon. Unlike pure vehicle finance methods, like hire purchase where you are paying the finance + interest, with contract hire you are paying an amount which has been calculated in accordance with the finance company’s view of what this will be worth at the contract end. You never own a lease vehicle, it is what we call a “usership” agreement.
So if industry experts and big data organisations, like CAP HPI, foresee this will be popular, a great RV / end value will be attributed to this EV, with the result being a much more competitive monthly price.
According to VW’s World Premiere the launch will commence in Autumn of 2023 and so we envisage that customers, personal and business, will be able to order around October 2023. You cannot order on the VW website just yet but you can sign up for updates here.
With any new EV, you will often see a “1st edition” released for earlier entrants and as demonstrators for the VW dealer groups. Expectations are that this will be a big seller for the VW Group with their CEO believing this will be “the next step” in their EVs with “the ID.7 as the new top model within the ID. Family.” There is even a suggestion of a limousine model for the ultimate luxury experience along with near-500 mile ranges and 200 kW charging capabilities.
While no formal levels have been confirmed, VW have promised some exciting options to be included in the EV such as eroPremium seats (with massage function), an electrically dimmable panoramic glass roof, 30-colour interior illumination, intelligent seats with climatronic (heated and cooled), 500L of luggage compartment.
AR head-up display, digital cockpit (with a 15” screen), intelligent air vents, IQ.Light, ID.Sound and a whole host of driver assistance systems like parking assistance (park assist plus), travel assist (predictive cruise and adaptive lane guidance), emergency lane assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic hazard assist and an area view camera. The fastback will also have over-the-air updates for software version updates and a series of in-car app connections.
So far two key models have been announced including:
