The need for good 7 seat electric cars is somewhat clear for the UK’s personal and business leasing customers. While there are a litany of good options in many of the other categories - SUV luxury, performance and hatchbacks - good people carrying and family 7 seated all-electric cars are somewhat limited.
As we highlighted in our recent Peugeot E-5008 EV preview more suitable products are arriving to supplement the existing line-up of the Volvo EX90, Mercedes EQB and EQV plus the Tesla Model X. Slowly but surely we are seeing the electric vehicle market improve and innovate in order to meet the growing demand.
And while this is heavily connected to the fleet and business car industry, we are witnessing personal / consumers move towards electrification. The price of vehicle is decreasing, the volume of charge points in the public domain is increasing and there are now a litany of great charging tariffs from electricity companies to support the transition. The infrastructure is very much here for 2024.
The Buzz about the ID.Buzz this week (21 March 2024) relates to two key big announcements - 1) the LWB option in a standard and bigger battery is coming; and 2) a GTX model is being released too. On the former, there has been a misnomer that the 2023 Buzz Model was a 7-seater family car.
To be clear, while a spacious vehicle, this is not suitable for the bigger families with just 5 passengers accommodated. But that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been popular; in December 2023 and January 2024 this was the best-selling EV for our e-car team. As you can see from the ID.Buzz we delivered - this is one of the most iconic and unique BEVs you can currently get your hands on.
Indeed this is a reinvention of the legendary T1 which so many fans of the 60s and 70s will remember fondly. Bringing this character to 2024 has been supplanted with some incredible technology features; Infotainment packs, open and close packs, comfort seat packs, assistance packs and alloy wheel choices. All of this is available through two specification options:
However, for 2024 VW are releasing a litany of new products to bolster this already robust selection. This will include a long wheelbase option which has a 3rd row of seats with ISOFIX with Top Tether. This means the LWB model will have capacity for 6 to 7 people, depending on the requirements.
You can also enjoy the new Smart Glass panoramic sunroof which is an option for the LWB seven seater. Filled with switchable liquid crystal, this allows a privacy mode with UV protection too. And there will be an ability to choose a different battery with the larger 86 kWh option. This can include the heat pump which helps to heat the interior via the heat from the battery and therefore add more efficiency / range.
To supplement all of the above, a new ID.Buzz GTX is also on route to the UK. This will have two battery / wheelbase configurations much like the models noted above. The GTX is the most powerful series-production Bulli which adds the dual motor configuration and the 4Motion all-wheel drive system. This translates to better trailer weight abilities with a sizeable 1800kg on offer.
The GTX is very much performance and towing specific but there are some distinctive technology and aesthetic improvements. A GTX external styling, black air intake grille, black body elements, 20” alloys, IQ Light LED matrix lights plus a new Cherry Red are available. Inside the GTX Buzz, you can enjoy the black headliner, black ArtVelours mircrofleece and red cross-stitching. A bigger 12.9” touchscreen includes the IDA voice assistant and ChatGPT integration is also included. As VW say - “Experience tomorrow’s technology today”
