The need for saleable and attractive EVs in the UK market is very much an obvious pressure for European car manufacturers. Notwithstanding the obvious dilemma for car makers in helping personal and business customer move into electric transportation, there are various other pressures which are making the viability and profitability be tested in various ways.
As we have noted previously, one of the difficult considerations for European car producers, is how they manage foreign influences. In particular, the Chinese market has been prolific in this sphere, offering an array of cost-effective and robust all-electric transport. From cheap to luxury, the movement in green technology has been more expedient. As the FT reports , there is an anticipation that some 25% of all EVs sold in Europe will have been made in China (including those western car makers who manufacture vehicles in China and import back into the EU).
And this just isn’t a European phenomenon; in the US the Fisker brand is encountering some financial issues, with Bloomberg reports of price reductions and sales to bring in much needed cash The extent of this problem is not yet understood in the UK, but if rumours are true then this manufacturer is facing some uphill battles. And the team at e-car do wish them all the best, with this being such an attractive and technologically sound proposition.
One European group continuing to fly the flag in the electric car world with almost a reckless abandonment is the VW team. Already in 2024, they have wowed us with the new ID7 saloon and tourer (estate), releasing the new ID.Buzz in 7-seat format and further confirming that a racing / performance brand will be made available across the range.
The GTX is a word synonymous with powerhouse EVs, exciting driving and individualised exteriors/interiors. The new ID.3 was announced in this GTX format earlier in March 2024, alongside the ID7 tourer. The ID.3 is very much the equivalent for the Golf fans out there.
Having being available since 2020, the ID.3 received an update last year, with the view of 2024 cementing the hatchback as the go-to for BEV customers. But some Golf fans who grew up enjoying the GTI, GTD and R, need more excitement and fragility. Moving to lithium-ion technology isn’t just about eco-conscious pragmatism; this is about driver performance, character and enjoyment too.
The ID.3 GTX is a RWD product being launched in a standard and Performance format. As the VW brand notes, they view this as a counterpart to the GTI Clubsport. Externally the individualised design will feature black air intakes, daytime running lights, black elements in high gloss finish and 20” Skagen alloys.
Inside the premium sports seats, red decorative stitching, multifunction steering wheel and high quality surface for the cockpit sets the vehicle apart. And the Performance will see adaptive chassis control included too.
The two models are set out below:
