What is fascinating about all-electric cars (and vans) is that it is now providing an opportunity for manufacturers to reignite their creativity and invoke new derivatives and models.

The iconic VW Camper van is something which still carries significant nostalgia, with fans of the 60s and 70s fondly remembering the character which this vehicle brought to the world. Fast-forward to 2022 and the German manufacturer decided to surprise the world by releasing the minivan in pure electric format, via their dedicated MEB platform, which all of their ID range utilises.

This 5-seat “Buzz”, a synonym for Bus, was publicly released in March 2022, with production of this unique vehicle beginning in June 2022. A multi-purpose vehicle, the ID Buzz aims to meet the needs of families, those with an active lifestyle or those business leasing customers who need to transport staff to events or around bigger premises with zero-emission tech.

What specification of the VW ID Buzz are available to lease?

As at November 2023, two key options have been confirmed with the:

  • Volkswagen ID.BUZZ ESTATE 150kW Life Pro 77kWh 5dr Auto - from £59,035, this model will include key options like 10-colour ambient lighting, App-Connect, Discover Navigation, rear view camera, heated multifunction steering wheel, heated front seats, digital cockpit, 10” colour screen display, wireless charging for a mobile phone, heated nozzles, adaptive cruise control, driver alert system, electronic engine sounds, park assist plus, LED headlights and a rear wiper; and

  • Volkswagen ID.BUZZ ESTATE 150kW Style Pro 77kWh 5dr Auto - from £63,835 the higher specification model will add 20” alloys, 30-colour ambient lighting, power tailgate, advance high-beam control dynamic light assist, IQ lights, illuminated moulding between headlamps, surround lighting and stainless steel pedals.

The colours available for the ID Buzz are immensely diverse with standard one-colour options like Candy White, Lime Yellow, Starlight Blue, Mono Silver (free of charge) and Deep black. However, two-tone paint options (for £2,790!) are available with a duo-tone Candy White to be paired with Lime Yellow, Energetic Orange, Starlight Blue or Bay Leaf Green. And inside, the options continue to be diverse with Sonom cloth in Palladium/Soul plus Miwo cloth in either Lime Yellow, Saffron Orange, X-Blue or Jade Green. An ArtVelours option is available in Mistral.

What options can you add to the VW ID.Buzz EV?

Because of the nature of this vehicle, there are some interesting options which can help you create the perfect combination. A Comfort Seat Package (at £3,150) adds 30-colour ambient lighting, power seats in front with memory, smart comfort entry, leather steering wheel, seat heater for all front seats, lumbar support and armrests.

The Comfort Seat package can be utilised in either Miwo or ArtVelours. For a little less, you can elect for a Styling Seat Package (priced at £1,068) which adds Miwo or ArtVelours with 30-colour ambient lighting, heated leather steering wheel, Bexel for the infotainment display and armrests on both sides of the front seat.

A retractable tow bar with electric release can be factory fitted for £980 or add an Open & Close Package for £1,055 to your Style which allows keyless locking, power-sliding doors in the back and an anti-theft alarm with interior monitoring. Inside you can add a 230V front passenger outlet for £410 or an Infotainment Package Plus for the 12” screen which is just £130.

Is the VW ID.Buzz a 7-seater?

At the moment this short-wheelbase version is not available to be utilised by more passengers. However, VW have confirmed that a new long wheelbase model will be also be introduced in 2024. In doing so, a 3rd row will become available for enabling one or two additional passengers to sit (coupled with ISOFIX).

And while a 6 or 7 seat passenger setup might be useful, the seats can actually be adjusted to instead provide more load capacity in the vehicle. Additionally, the 7-seat ID Buzz will be introduced with a bigger battery - 85 kWh - which will provide greater range and power, particularly if the vehicle is towing (up to 1000kg Braked) or if this is full-laden with 7 passengers. A further model, the all-electric California Concept, is due to be added to the model line-up and this will be a luxury camper van equipped for the future.

How does the electric Buzz perform?

This RWD minivan will have a 77 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 10.2 seconds, 90 mph top speeds and 150 kW (or 201hp). Expect a combined winter range of 180 miles with warmer weather allowing for 240 miles.

On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 8 hour and 15 minute 0 – 100% charging times with the 175 kW DC maximum allowing 30 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 1121L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 110 mpg. The ID Buzz can tow 750kg (Unbraked) or 1000kg (Braked). In terms of vehicle dimensions, the vehicle is 4712mm in Length, 1927mm in Height and 2211mm in width (including mirrors).
