The VW ID.5 electric Car Lease - Your Definitive Guide
When you launch an incredible deal on an amazing SUV Coupe, like the ID.5 from VW, it’s only right that we receive a number of queries as to how the process works. Whilst we detail many key and niche aspects within our car guides, it’s sometimes useful to provide a quick overview of how the leasing arrangement works for our personal and business customers.
To be clear, our team can offer personal (retail) and business (fleet) solutions and these essentially work in exactly the same way and with similar costings. However, there are some slightly different considerations and observations which do apply, especially when it comes to the taxation treatment of an electric car for your business / limited company. In each business instance you should always consult an accountant in order to provide you with the most robust advice.
So what is leasing?
The formal term for this is Contract Hire and effectively this does what it says. This is a fixed contract for 2 / 3 / 4 years where the price will be determined by your annual mileage (5,000 - 30,000 per annum) and your initial rental (deposit).
Because we are looking at an EV, the annual mileage will always be considered in conjunction with the car you require, as the range and charging times will determine the product suitability. In general, the longer the term, the cheaper the monthly rental will be (although this is not always the case).
But you do have to consider that as a fixed term agreement, this is not something you can just end without penalties. The process of early termination, where you end a lease agreement before the contract end, involves you paying around half of the remaining rentals to return it. Personal or business, you do need to take this onboard when comparing cost vs term / flexibility
The first payment you make is called the initial rental and many customers will be familiar with this as buying a new / used car often involves some form of deposit or initial commitment. With leasing, the overall cost of the finance is fundamentally the same regardless of making a no-deposit or big deposit.
Effectively you have an overall cost to the agreement over the 24 / 36 / 48 months and you decide to carve this up as you need to. For many bigger businesses, they will use a no-deposit leasing approach in order to keep fleet consistency and maintain cash-flow.
Whereas some personal customers will use a “6 spread or 9 spread” arrangement, which effectively means paying an initial rental of 6 or 9 times the monthly rental i.e. for a £300 per month deal, you would pay £1,800 for a 6 spread initial rental and £2,700 in the case of the 9 spread. Effectively choose what best suits you.
All of the vehicles we supply here are either brand-new or pre-registered. In the case of the latter, this means that the vehicles are registered but not that they are used (no previous owners). Used Electric car Leasing is very different! We always set out the registration date and details so that our customers are aware, in particular so they understand the warranty period, service schedules and MOT dates.
So, in the case of the ID.5 - the warranty period is 3 years (or 60,000 miles), servicing at every 2 years (or 20,000 miles) and the MOT due on the 3rd anniversary of the registration date. This has to be considered in conjunction with the term you take (if you don’t want to undertake any maintenance) and also in conjunction with the funder-maintenance options.
With leasing, the standard pricing is based on the customer maintaining all the relevant aspects of the vehicle including servicing, tyres and any breakdown recoveries outside of that provided by VW.
However, for an additional monthly rental, you can include a funder-maintenance package which can either cover your service /maintenance or include the tyres too. As per the below, the VWFS package on the ID.5 will include various aspects BUT do note that punctures on the tyres are not included. Nor are the windscreens.
Once you have decided on the right contract, you then need to complete a credit application with our team. As a credit-broker, not a lender, we use the information you supply about you or the company and upload this to the finance company’s systems to make the decision.
To be clear, this is a product which is suitable only if you have positive credit. For personal lease customers this means you cannot have defaults, CCJs or be in an IVA to successfully apply. We do suggest that you use Experian to check your credit score before applying with our team, as credit suitability is taken into account.
The affordability of the arrangement is also key and our team need to run through an Income and Expenditure assessment with you; our Lythium proposal form does this for you via a series of simple questions and numeric entries. At the heart of this is ensuring that the monthly rentals, maintenance, insurance costs and running costs are affordable for you for the duration of the contract.
For a business, if you are a sole trader or partnership, then the underwriters will review both your personal credit and the company financial information i.e. accounts, bank statements and any management information. For a limited company, the information will be procured from Companies House, as this is where your accounts are posted.
The underwriters will look at the company trading history, profitability and any other relevant payment metrics in order to make an informed assessment. For those lifestyle businesses with a limited net worth or for new-start companies, the underwriters may consider the application with a director’s guarantee.
This means a director offering to step-in and pay for the vehicle rentals / early termination settlement if the company becomes insolvent or incurs some form of issue. A DG is always subject to the credit profile of the director providing the undertaking.
Once you have the credit accepted by the finance company, we can move through to the order stages. This means you will be asked to sign our order for the vehicle / term, an Information Notice and a Key Contract hire document based on the finance product and the EV. This is about ensuring that the arrangement is properly understood by you or the business before committing further.
Once you sign and send these, our team will order the vehicle and organise the finance documents to be sent to you (or the directors). Upon signing, we can then move onto the delivery aspects. Most vehicles in our industry are “driven delivered” which means that an individual driver will collect the vehicle from the holding centre and drive it to you, as opposed to being delivered on a commercial vehicle (like a low-loader or transporter).
The vehicle should always arrive with at least 25% charge and be in a clean condition for you to inspect. Our team are nevertheless here to assist where any uncertainties or issues do arise. And to say thank you, we will send you a free Zap Map Premium subscription for 12 months as a mean of saying thank you for your business!
