Leasing a BMW i5 in the UK

When will BMW electrify one of their favourite cars - the BMW 5 Series?

Until May 2023, BMW were noticeably quiet with their announcements of a new all-electric alternative to the petrol / diesel / plug-in version of the executive saloon, which has been a mainstay for UK company car drivers for the last 15 years. With the i4 Gran Coupe (a 4 series alternative) and the iX3 and iX SUVs steadily succeeding, it was only a matter of time before more innovative options were announced.

And the good news is that from June 2023, BMW have updated their website to allow UK leasing customers to buy or lease the new BMW i5 (a 100% electric saloon) – see the BMW website for more details.

And what specifications will be available and how much?

As at June 2023, you can choose from the two key models:

  • M Sport – from £74,000 the standard “40” battery configuration will include 19” alloys, M Sport suspension, M Sport leather steering wheel, leatherette OR M Alcantara, electric folding mirrors, velour floor mats, parking assistant, reversing assistant, panorama view, park distance control, Live Cockpit plus, Harmon Kardon HiFi, driving assistant, kidney Iconic Glow, panoramic glass sunroof, integration bar, climate control, heated seats, integrated video streaming and video games; and
  •  M Model – from £97,750 the upgraded “60” battery has 20” alloys, Veganza upholstery, M Spoiler, M Sport brakes, Integral Active Steering, Adaptive Suspension, M carbon mirrors, carbon, M-specific instrument panel, Bowers & Wilkins surround sound and lumbar support. As per the BMW website this is “the most athletic” version of the BMW i5.

There are a whole host of packs to add to your i5 saloon EV with the Comfort Pack at £1700 (for comfort access, electric bootlid, heated steering wheel and travel / comfort system),  Comfort Plus Pack at £5000 (which adds 4-zone climate, front comfort seats, heated rear seats and ventilated fronts seats), Technology Pack at £2000 (BMW natural interaction, interior camera, HUD, and parking assistant plus) and the Technology Pack Plus at £3300. In terms of other options, consider sun protection glass at £470, the electric towbar at £1200 or the Crafted Clarity Controls at £600. Making the i5 bespoke to you is entirely possible.

In terms of colours on the electric 5 series choose from – Carbon Black, Black Sapphire, Mineral White, Phytonic Blue, Tanzanite Blue, Brooklyn Grey, Oxide Grey and Sophisto Grey. The 21” BiColour Jet Black alloy wheels at £3000 make this the perfect performance EV.

But how does the i5 eDrive 40 perform?

The 81.2 kWh lithium-ion battery will offer 0 – 62 times of 6.0 seconds, 120 mph top speeds and 250 kW (or 335 hp). This model is a RWD option. Expect a combined winter range of 245 miles with warmer weather allowing for 340 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 8 hour and 45 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 205 kW DC maximum allowing 28 minute 10 – 80% times. As an executive saloon, this has a favourable cargo volume of 490L and vehicle fuel equivalent of 147 mpg. This i5 can tow 1500 kg braked and 750 kg unbraked.

But how does the i5 xDrive M60 perform?

The 81.2 kWh lithium-ion battery will offer 0 – 62 times of 3.8 seconds, 143 mph top speeds and 442 kW (or 593 hp). This model is an AWD. Expect a combined winter range of 225 miles with warmer weather allowing for 300 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 8 hour and 45 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 205 kW DC maximum allowing 28 minute 10 – 80% times. As an executive saloon, this has a favourable cargo volume of 490L and vehicle fuel equivalent of 132 mpg. This i5 can tow 2000 kg braked and 750 kg unbraked.

With such beneficial BiK rates available on electric cars, it is not surprising that company car schemes, salary sacrifice arrangements and business are looking into BEVs as a solution for their fleets. When you enjoy a car through the business, you will pay a tax to HMRC which is based on the emissions of the car you are leasing.

Because the i5 emits zero CO2 per km, this allows leasing customers to enjoy the 2% BiK until tax year 2024/2025 (so roughly £50 a month in company car tax) with the 3% in 2025 / 2026 (making this around £75 per month). When you compare this to a petrol or diesel BMW 5 series, from a financial perspective it is clear what route many UK drivers will be taking.

Update (Feb 2024)

To complement the popular saloon model, BMW added a practical estate option in the form of the BMW i5 Tourer. This “all-electric versatility” is aimed at combining driving dynamics, electric performance and modern versatility.

With increasing numbers of UK personal and lease customers transitioning into all-electric cars, having practical family cars is now essential. And not every customer will want the SUV or Crossover style vehicles which are now a staple part of the UK’s automotive demographic. You can build your new i5 estate on the BMW website with choices including:

  • Sport Edition – available from £69,945, this includes key features like the 19” Style 933 alloys, leatherette, sun protection glass, Harmon/Kardon, heated front seats, ambient lighting, driving assistant, exterior sound, parking assistant, wireless charging and connected package professional;
  •  M Sport - from £76,355 this includes key features like the 19” Style 935 alloys, M Alcantara, M sport suspension, M sport steering wheel, high-gloss shadowline exterior trim, lumbar support and M Sport brakes; and
  •  M - from £99,995 this includes key features like 20” alloys Style 940 M, perforated and quilted Veganza upholstery, Bowers and Wilkins surround system, electric front seats with driver memory, 4-zone air conditioning, active suspension professional and BMW Iconic Sounds.

Add options like the Technology Pack (interior camera, cockpit professional, BMW Natural interaction) and Comfort Plus Pack (comfort access, comfort seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel and travel comfort system.

How much is a BMW i5 to lease?
Starting from £75,000 and with specifications / configurations up to £100,000 (and beyond) this luxury EV saloon is likely to cost around £750 – £1500 per month, contract dependent. Compare the new BMW i5 against the Mercedes EQE, Genesis G80 Electrified and VW ID.7. Expect to pay a little more for the tourer with the slightly higher price

Is a BMW i5 a good car to lease?
The i5 will aim to build on the success of the combustion 5 series which has always been enjoyed by the UK’s automotive media and press – What Car? rating this a 5/5, Top Gear at 9/10 and Heycar at 10/10. On aesthetics and ergonomics, the new i5 looks set to deliver but much will rest on its electric expertise. A robust 300 mile combined real-world range coupled with a 200 kW DC charging capability (for sub-30 min charging sessions) suggests this will be a winner. With the addition of an estate vehicle in February 2024, this is likely to be a family favourite in those all-electric households.

Is a BMW i5 lease right for me or the business?
To help our personal, business and salary sacrifice lease customers truly understand if the i5 is correct for them, we have created an EVC™ - Electric Vehicle Certificate – which sets out everything you need to know. This works in conjunction with our bespoke “Living with your …” tools, which details seasonal range, charging speeds, charging times, charging cables full-charge costs. We also ensure you have access to charge point installation, charge point location apps, EV reviews and motor insurance. While this prestige saloon is a beautiful machine, we need to ensure this is right for you in all aspects.

Where do I find the best BMW i5 lease deals in the UK?
While our e-car leasing deals section highlight some of the leading pure electric vehicles on offer, some of our customers may head to price comparison websites like AutoLeaseCompare, LeaseLoco and Leasing.Com. And if you are looking to compare leasing v buying the new i5 then visit your retailer for a test-drive and HP and / or PCP quotation. While the e-car lease team will always offer good value, remember that we are the UK’s leading experts on electric cars and provide leading service each and every time.

What is the cheapest BMW i5 Electric leasing option?
At the time of writing (May 2022) the cheapest model will be the i5 “40” M Sport at £75,000. Perhaps, like the i4, the group will produce a small battery “35” and get this more towards a £50,000 price tag? The estate will feature a slightly cheaper 250kW eDrive40 Sport Edition 84kWh 4dr Auto at just under £70,000.

What is the range of an Electric BMW i5?
As per the e-car website , the best BMW Range is set out for all of our leasing customers to review before buying their new EV. But unlike many other websites, we don’t show you the “best case” scenario and work more in real-life assessments. For example, the i5 40 will cover 295 miles (combined) on a full charge but this would be 210 miles on a cold weather motorway journey or 420 miles in warm weather city driving. In the same way, the M60 BMW i5 would be 265 miles (combined) but this would be 190 miles on a cold weather motorway journey or 375 miles in warm weather city driving. The estate / tourer model, offers a slightly reduced range capability for you.

Can you tow with a BMW i5?
Yes - you can add an electric towbar for £1200. As per the BMW website - the towbar is operated by a switch in the luggage compartment. It can be swivelled electrically until completely recessed underneath the rear apron. Includes a trailer stabilisation monitor.

What is the towing capacity of the BMW i5?
The BMW i5 towing capacity of 750kg (unbraked) and 1500kg (braked) for the smaller battery. The bigger battery will increase towing capacity to 2000kg (braked)

What is the MPG of the BMW i5?
This EV has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 147 mpg in the “40” model with the “M60” offering some 132 mpg. In tourer format this is 142 mpg in and 130 mpg respectively
