Leasing a BMW i7 in the UK

Can BMW compete with the Mercedes EQS Saloon or the Tesla Model S?

Until April 2022, one Germany’s premier vehicle manufacturers appeared to have been left behind in the electrification race, particularly with Merc racing ahead with a new EV model on what has seemed to be on a monthly basis! But in April 2022, the BMW group announced that their executive saloon, the 7 series, would be made available in a pure electric format. For many chauffeurs, luxury travel and corporate customers with city-centre electrification requirements, the new i7 will almost certainly be a perfect vehicle to add to the list.

BMW are launching with two key specifications on their EV saloon – the Excellence (available from £110,500) and the M Sport (available from £114,600). The Excellence will include key specification like 19” alloys, Iconic Glow kidney grille, leatherette upholstery, crystal headlights, navigation, Individual interior, climate comfort windscreen, front electric seats, interior camera, charging cables for both a 3-pin plug and a Type 2 connection, eDrive exterior sound, IconicSounds electric, driving assistance, active guard professional, wireless charging tray, live cockpit professional.

The M Sport will add an “athletic” character with 20” alloys, M Sport brakes with blue callipers, high-gloss shadow line and M leather steering wheel.

There are a host of great options to add including the Sky Lounge Pack  for a panoramic sunroof (£850), Front Comfort Pack (for front/rear heated and ventilated seats with massage function) at £2500, the £5000 Rear Comfort Pack for Rear Side Window and Windscreen, Electric Blinds, Ventilated Rear Seats, Multifunctional Rear Seats, Rear Massage Seats and Front and Rear Heat Comfort System.

One of the truly amazing packs – the Executive Pack – is something to behold at £10,000. This will include Rear Side Window and Windscreen Electric Blinds, Ventilated Front Seats, Ventilated Rear Seats, Multifunctional Rear Seats, Travel & Comfort System, Rear Massage Seats, Front and Rear Heat Comfort System, Executive Lounge Seating, Executive Lounge Rear Console and BMW Theatre Screen.

It is the latter facet which is absolutely amazing – a 31” screen, which can be used with Amazon Fire TV, sits in back so that passengers can enjoy a truly cinematic experience. Other comfort features to review are the £1350 automatic door option and parking assistant pro at £400. If you want a truly unforgettable motoring experience (as per the BMW website), then consider some of these special additions

But can the i7 offer a good electric driving experience?

The usable 101 kWh usable battery offers 400 kW (or 536hp) for 0 - 62 times of 4.7 seconds and 149mph top speeds. The i7 offers combined winter ranges of 265 miles with warmer weather increasing this to 360 miles (on a full charge). In terms of charging times / speeds, this luxury motor will take 11 hours to go from 0 – 100% on the 11kW AC max, with the 195 kW DC rapid charging capability enabling 10 – 80% times in just 35 minutes.

And is there a supercar version?

As at May 2023, the German manufacturer announced one of the most luxurious EVs known to date, when it was confirmed that an M70 xDrive version would go into production. The M Model, will offer a combination of agility, dynamics and power, with both performance and comfort.

Standard options like the ventilated front seats, electric sports seats, interior camera, massaging seats, natural interaction, driving assistant, executive drive suspension, integral active steering, wireless charging tray, live cockpit pro with HUD, driving assistant plus and 21” alloys make this a truly unique experience.

But how does the M70 i70 perform?

The usable 101 kWh usable battery offers 485 kW (or 650hp) for 0 - 62 times of 3.7 seconds and 149mph top speeds. The i7 offers combined winter ranges of 255 miles with warmer weather increasing this to 345 miles (on a full charge). In terms of charging times / speeds, this luxury motor will take 5 hours and 30 mins to go from 0 – 100% on the 22 kW AC max, with the 200 kW DC rapid charging capability enabling 10 – 80% times in just 28 minutes.

Do you need to put up a large initial rental (deposit) for the i7 leasing option?

For expensive electric cars, many businesses presume that you need to utilise large capital outlay as part of the arrangement. Unlike a purchase product, like Hire Purchase or a Personal Contract Purchase (for individuals), contract hire is not interest led in the same way.

By that we mean that the purchase style products are centred around an APR, which means that in “borrowing” less you reduce your interest payable on the loan and therefore the monthly amounts. Contract hire is based on a series of key metrics – the annual mileage, term and car / specification – which provide a total amount payable for that contract.

While you can pay a big initial rental of up to 9 or 12 x the monthly rental, the total amount payable compared to a no deposit option will be the same. You are not making any interest savings so unless you are trying to reduce an impending corporation tax bill or have a specific “equity” amount in your existing vehicle, and you want to maintain cash-flow positivity, then utilise the no deposit option by selecting “1” on the instant quote calculator.
