Leasing a BMW iX1 Electric in the UK

BMW are releasing brand-new EV product with such pace that their competitors – Audi, Mercedes and Tesla - must be taking note. Our e-car lease customers have been blessed with some great SUV and sports car options for 2022 but the German manufacturer are far from done. Launching at the end of 2022, a new fully electric BMW iX1 will be made available to order, providing a more cost-effective small SUV alternative to the current product suite.

What is the iX1? Quite simply, this will be based on the X1, a small but practical SUV which has been revised for 2022. While the X1 will still be available in combustion and plug-in hybrid format, the “iX1” is the way in which BMW will denote this pure EV options.

With the iX1 being a new product to the UK, there are now confirmed specifications on this BEV including:

  • Sport – the base model will include 18” style 865 alloy wheels, Sensatec upholstery and Quartz Silver matt interior trim;
  • xLine – the middle model enjoys upgraded 18” bicolour 866 alloy wheels, Vernasca leather and black high-gloss interior trim; and
  • M Sport - the top-spec option includes 19” bicolour 871 M alloy wheels, Vernasca leather and aluminium hexacube trim.

The iX1 will feature the striking kidney grille with the distinguishing blue accents to denote this is a zero-emission option. The 3D L-shaped rear lights will be adopted with this model too. Inside this Crossover will feature the Curved Display BMW controls. An upgraded central console which includes vehicle operate switches together with adequate luggage compartment capacity, which can easily be configured, are now standard.

You are also able to add an optional trailer tow hitch which provides an electrically adjustable ball head and trailer stability control. With other additional options like the panoramic glass sunroof, 21” 877 M Bicolour alloys and all-weather floor mats available, you can easily make this your perfect personal, business or salary sacrifice EV lease deal.

How much will the BMW iX1 be? Will it be worth it?

This compact electric crossover will start at around £48,000, so do not expect this to be a cheap EV to lease; although it will offer better value than the iX3 or iX. And in terms of capability, the 64.7 kWh usable battery delivers 230 kW (or 308hp), 0 – 62 times of 5.7 seconds and 112 mph top speeds. In terms of charging the iX1, the 11 kW AC max enables 0 – 100% in 7 hours with the 130 kW DC rapid charge power providing 29 minute 10 – 80% times. For range, the iX1 will cover around 195 miles (combined) in colder weather with warmer weather providing 265 miles of range.

In September 2023 BMW announced a new version of the iX1 which is available to order now, with deliveries due late 2023 / early 2024.  Starting from around £45,000 the new 20 model, which supplements the 30 version, will be a FWD with a 64.7 kWh usable battery. This will offer 0 – 62 times of 8.3 seconds, 106 mph top speeds and 150 kW (or 201 hp).

Expect a combined winter range of 200 miles with warmer weather allowing for 275 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 7 hour 0 – 100% charging times with the 130 kW DC maximum allowing 29 minute 10 – 80% times. The car has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 147 mpg. And the boot volume is a considerable 490L. It has no Bidirectional charging.

Does the BMW iX1 get an electric car Government Grant?

One of the queries our e-car team do get asked is whether or not they will receive financial support on their BMW leasing deal from the Government. Until the 13 June 2022, those EVs which had a cost of £32,000 (or lower) would receive a £1500 grant from the Government. This would be removed from the total invoice price. However, as of 14 June 2022 the Government announcement that this grant, also known as the PIGC, would no longer apply to ANY vehicle. Having previously been £5000 on any electric car, this grant has been consistently amended and reduced. But as our e-car lease “living with your” tools demonstrate, there are still good financial reasons for adopting an EV as your next new car.

How much is a BMW iX1 Electric to lease?
Starting from £48,000, the new compact crossover will not be a cheap EV to lease; but that doesn’t mean you are not getting great value for money. Expect monthly prices to be about £450 - £700 per month depending on the specification and contract required. However, EVs do attract great residual values from our leading finance companies and this will be reflected in your price.

Is a BMW iX1 Electric a good car to lease?
With this EV being new to the UK market, there hasn’t been any demonstrators or test vehicles available for our team, or media outlets, to review. With BMW being a long-standing electric car manufacturer, our customers can expect a positive experience; the iX3 and iX have both received some great reviews. Indeed, with further battery improvements, we are expecting the iX1 to be a credible 2023 leasing option.

Is a BMW iX 1Electric lease right for me or the business?
While BMW have an enviable reputation for EV tech, understanding the practicality of this car will involve more than the design, technology highlights and build quality. Operating an EV does need additional consideration, which is why our “Living with your …” tools are so crucial to our PCH, BCH and Sal Sac customers making the right decision. We do suggest that you utilise our tools for understanding range, charging times, charging speeds, charge point infrastructure and Whole of Life costs. Remember, that there is more to pay than just the finance aspect on a vehicle.

Where do I find the best BMW iX1 lease deals in the UK?
While many of the best electric vehicles will feature on the e-car lease website, some of our leading prices can be seen on AutoLeaseCompare, CarWow, LeaseFetcher and LeaseLoco, which are some of the UK’s prime car leasing comparison portals. In terms of leasing v buying on the iX1, visit your local retailer for a test-drive and comparable PCP and HP quote. Contract hire is a usership product and isn’t suitable if you wish to purchase the BMW at the end of the contract.

What is the cheapest BMW iX1 Electric leasing option?
At the time of writing (June 2022) the cheapest option will be the fully electric BMW iX1 Sport at around £48,000.

What is the range of an Electric BMW iX1?
Because the efficiency of the BEV will vary according to driving style, behaviours and temperature it is almost impossible to give one overall range. With the iX1 expect colder climates to deliver a range of 160 miles on motorways and 225 miles in city conditions. With warmer temperatures, expect an improvement to 210 miles on motorways and 340 miles in the city. Driver-style, such as acceleration and top speeds, will also influence the efficiency of the BMW SUV.

Can you tow with a BMW iX1?
Yes – you can tow with this EV. This option – the Trailer Tow Hitch – can be added by BMW at factory for you.

What is the towing capacity of the BMW iX1?
The iX1 is capable of towing 750kg (unbraked) and 1200kg (braked).

What is the MPG of the BMW iX1?
This EV has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 144 mpg
