BYD Atto 3 Car leasing
The new BYD Yuan, or ATTO 3 as it is known in European markets, is the latest small SUV (subcompact SUV) to enter the UK’s personal, business and salary sacrifice leasing market – officially launching in March 2023. So, what is this new EV and what should I compare it against? The ATTO 3 is the first European model which the BYD company, or Build Your Dreams, are utilising to showcase their pure electric capabilities.
To provide some assurance, this car originally went into production in 2016 for Chinese customers. While historically a mix of combustion, hybrid and electric, the 2021 facelift – known as the Yuan Plus – was equipped in electric format only, with upgraded EV platforms and technology. Drivers need to compare the ATTO 3 against the Kia Niro EV, the MG ZS, Citroen e-C4 and Renault Megane E-Tech.
Starting from around £36,490 this option will have a usable 60 kWh lithium-ion battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 7.3 seconds, 99 mph top speeds and 150 kW (or 201hp). And the drivetrain will be FWD. Expect a combined winter range of 170 miles with warmer weather allowing for 225 miles on a full charge.
On charging, the 7.4 kW AC max will allow 9 hour and 45 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 88 kW DC maximum allowing 44 minute 10 – 80% times. An upgraded 11kW AC function allows 6 hour and 30 min 0 – 100% charging times. This pro-family car has a reasonable cargo volume of 440L and a vehicle fuel equivalent of 135 mpg.
To maintain simplicity in the UK market, just three key models have been announced with almost identical specification save for a few battery or technology upgrades (bear in mind that the BYD SUV is centred around cost-effectiveness and cheap leasing deals):
The big opportunity for BYD is in the consumer and salary sacrifice markets, where cheap EV leasing is more urgently needed for 2023 and beyond. The reality is that most pure electric options are priced well beyond £40,000 making this a truly unaffordable mode of transport for many customers.
In the retail / personal lease segment, the taxation benefits which companies enjoy are not passed across and with EVs costing more than like for like models coupled with nominal Whole of Life cost savings, it can be more difficult to encourage a transition. But where certain manufacturers, like MG, have excelled is in delivering these £25,000 - £35,000 electric car options. For conscientious low-mileage customers, these are the perfect car.
