Leasing a Honda e in the UK

For a manufacturer with an enviable reputation for hybrid technology, and build quality, the expectation for a fully electric car from Honda was clearly palpable. And while the concept was announced as early as 2017, the production model “Honda e” only made its way into the public domain in 2019, with this EV hatchback officially being released (and built) from 2020.

Moving forwards, Honda have committed to a further 30 EV models to be made available worldwide by 2030 at an investment cost of some $40 billion! While some of this will be bespoke to the American, Japanese and Chinese markets, Honda are aiming to gain more market share in the UK with further models to bolster the Honda e which faces stiff competition from the Peugeot e208, the Vauxhall Corsa-e and the VW Id.3.

So, what options are there with the 3dr EV from Honda? To simplify customer choice, there are two key models to select:

  •  e – at just over £34,400 enjoy heated seats, pop-out door handles, Honda sensing, side camera mirror system, sky roof, leather steering wheel, privacy glass, LED daytime running lights, smart entry and start and full-width dual screen; and
  •   e Advance – at nearly £37,000 this adds heated steering wheel, 230V outlet, Parking Pilot and a centre camera mirror system.

In terms of additional options consider the Style Pack (for front and rear decoration plus body-colouring) for £2165, the Illumination Pack (doorstep garnishes and console illumination) for £655 and choose between the 16” and 17” alloy selection. Black or brown leather upgrades are available on the Honda e for circa £1400.

But the Honda e is a small car – can it offer me, or the business, enough range? Both the standard e and the e advance both use a 28.5 kWh usable battery. For the standard e this delivers 100 kW (or 134hp) for 0 – 62 times of 9 seconds and top speeds of 90 mph. For the range on this EV hatch expect a combined 85 miles in colder temps with warmer climates offering 120 miles on a full charge.

Charging times are reasonable with the electric Honda; the 6.6 kW AC max allows for 5 hours 0 – 100% times with the 56kW DC rapid charge max proving 10 – 80% times of 36 minutes. The “e Advance” is slightly quicker and this delivers 113 kW (or 152hp) for 0 – 62 times of 8.3 seconds and top speeds of 105 mph.

Cars like the Honda e are ideal for those personal or business leasing customers with low mileage driving; not every EV is right for every customer. One of the key things the e-car lease website provides, via the “Living with your ...” tools, is a comprehensive analysis of what makes the EV work for you or not; seasonal range, charging speeds, charging times, cables, charging costs and cost per mile.

For example, the Honda e will cost just £8 for a full tank of fuel (based on an electricity price of £0.28 kWh) which translates to circa 7.5 pence per mile. For a customer covering 5,000 miles on a 3-year contract this equates to a Whole of Life fuel bill of £1125.

But taking the Honda e as an example, if you are a predominantly motorway driver, the car will only achieve around 70 miles on a full charge in colder temps with around 95 miles in warmer weather. For high-mileage customers, this would mean at least daily charging sessions. Regardless of any company car tax or Whole of Life cost savings, the EV must still be suitable for your needs and requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What is the range of an Electric Honda e?
As we have been exploring within our Honda EV review, the range of the vehicle must be considered in conjunction with the driving style and driver behaviours. For example, winter will see a decrease in the efficiency of the Honda e, so do not base your purchase or leasing decision on a best-case scenario. Expect colder temperatures to deliver 70 miles on the motorway and 105 miles in city-driving compared to 95 miles and 155 miles respectively in warmer climates. This all presumes a near full charge, expect this to be a little lower as we often charge our EVs to 85% - 90%.

Can you tow with a Honda e?
No - you cannot add a tow hitch and / or tow attachment for this car.

What is the towing capacity of the Honda e?
N/A - you cannot tow a trailer or caravan with this EV.

What is the MPG of the Honda e?
This EV has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 149mpg on the standard and Advance models.

How much is a Honda e to lease?
With the 3dr hatchback being priced at £34,000 - £37,000 (not including any options or extras), UK customers can expect lease deals of around £325 - £450 per month depending on the contract and model chosen. The Honda EV is a little more expensive than what many thought it would be.

Is a Honda e a good car to lease?
For lower mileage and city-driving customers, this is a funky and alternative EV to add to the wish list. For anyone using motorways and covering high mileages, this is not the best electric car to consider. Ratings are mixed with the automotive press – Car Magazine are at 4/5, Top Gear at 8/10 and What Car? at 3/5. I think we can all agree the retro and charming exterior coupled with a punchy 0 – 62 time make this an interesting proposition. But for those personal or business leasing customers seeking practicality, look elsewhere.

Is a Honda e lease right for me or the business?
Style and funkiness aside, the ability of an EV to suit you, or the fleet, is a series of questions around range requirements, charging speeds, charge point infrastructure and Whole of Life costs. Many company car and salary sacrifice schemes will want to enjoy the £20 per month company car tax bill (based on a standard model for a 40% taxpayer in England) but the EV lifestyle must also be suitable. What mileage are you covering? Do you have workplace or domestic charge point solutions? Using our “Living with your ...” tools much of this is set out for you to answer quickly and accurately. Where do I find the best Honda e lease deals in the UK?

So, for these deal hunters, we expect them to meet our team via price comparison websites like AutoLeaseCompare, CarWow, LeaseFetcher and LeaseLoco. Or you may see us on review platforms like GreenCarGuide and Discover EV. For those looking at understanding if it is better to buy or lease your Honda e, then head to your local retailer to test-drive and receive a comparable PCP or HP quotation.

What is the cheapest Honda e Electric leasing option?
At the time of writing (May 2022) there are only two options to select and the cheapest car is the HATCHBACK100kW 36kWh 5dr Auto. Of course, keep an eye out on our special offers section, where we sometimes put better cars / specification on the website for a lower monthly rental. Use our “price” on the “capabilities at a glance” to understand the value of the leasing deal against the P11d
