Leasing a Hyundai INSTER Electric in the UK

Electric cars cannot all be performance-led or centred around luxury and finish. For the UK to meet the lofty ambitions of the ZEV Mandate in 2025 and beyond, there needs to be an abundance of cost-effective and affordable small EVs to access.

Moreover, retail and personal leasing customers do not enjoy the seismic financial and taxation rewards which limited companies do in the UK, so manufacturers like Hyundai need to accommodate these customers too. While the Kona EV, a small SUV, has been a mainstay for many individual and fleet customers, the South Korean brand is now moving into the cheaper car territory with their brand-new INSTER.

“A compact electric vehicle that makes a bold statement” the INSTER is a small car with the internal flexibility and room to ensure that it can still attract families to this city-functional option. With the flat “electric vehicle floor” Hyundai have built the INSTER more upwards to ensure internal capacity, with almost SUV type silhouettes.

Indeed, the brand showcase the vehicle with 0 seats, if the vehicle is needed for sleeping requirements or with 2 seats for those carrying a canoe (or similar). When you consider that the EV is marketed as an adventure car, you do get some sense of what the group are trying to convey.

None of this practicality is to downplay the fundamental performance and tech of the vehicle. A series of safety features, driver aids and battery options are being purported as bold and smart.

Customers in the UK can choose between 3 specifications, including:

  •  01 – from £23,495 this adds a 10.25” LCD instrument cluster and a 10.25” LCD navigation screen, smart cruise control, heat pump and battery heater, climate control, rear parking sensors, electric heated and folding door mirrors, rear view monitor and 15” alloys;
  •  02 - from £26,745 this adds 17” alloys, privacy glass, sliding and reclining seats, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, LED headlamps, front parking sensors and flat-folding front/passenger seats; and
  •  03 - from £28,745 this adds the cross Design package, upgaded 17” alloys, electric sunroof, blind spot monitor, surround view monitor and collision avoidance assist.

In terms of options, consider the Tech Pack to add the V2L functionality (Bidirectional charging) and the digital key. Dealer-fit options include the entry guards, trunk liner, mud guards, bike carrier hitch and the seatback table. Colours include Black Pearl, Natural Ivory, Atlas White, Aero Silver and Amazona Green. A Black or Grey interior is present on the option selected.

But how does the electric INSTER perform?

Two electric motor configurations will feature including:

  •  Standard Range – has a usable battery of 39 kWh which offers 71kW (95hp), top speeds of 87 mph and 0-62 times of 11.7 seconds. Real-world ranges suggest a combined 130 miles in colder weather with warmer temperatures to allow for 180 miles (on a full charge) – 155 miles combined . The 11kW AC allows for 0-100% charging times of 4 hour and 15 minutes with the 73 kW DC enabling 10-80% in 29 minutes. The EV has Bidirectional charging – V2L via a 3.6kW AC Type 2 Adapter on exterior and 1 UK socket interior. It has a 161 mpg equivalent, 280L cargo volume but far more with the seat configuration chosen. The Heat Pump is standard; and
  •  Long Range – has a usable battery of 46 kWh which offers 85kW (114hp), top speeds of 93 mph and 0-62 times of 10.6 seconds. Real-world ranges suggest a combined 150 miles in colder weather with warmer temperatures to allow for 210 miles (on a full charge) – 185 miles combined . The 11kW AC allows for 0-100% charging times of 5 hours with the 85 kW DC enabling 10-80% in 29 minutes. The EV has Bidirectional charging – V2L via a 3.6kW AC Type 2 Adapter on exterior and 1 UK socket interior. It has a 163 mpg equivalent, 280L cargo volume but far more with the seat configuration chosen. The Heat Pump is standard

With prices just above £20,000, the INSTER is very much a comparison option to the likes of the Dacia Spring, Fiat Grande Panda, Vauxhall Frontera and Citroen e-C3 Aircross. However, the sportier and aesthetically-pleasing Renault 5 e-tech, also features in this price range, so competition is already there.

With this aiming to be more of a car for the people, it’s on dealerships and leasing brokers, like e-car, to ensure that customers are properly educated on the nuances of the BEV lifestyle. Regardless of how cheap or amazing a leasing deal is, the vehicle must be suitable.

To ensure the new INSTER is fundamentally right for you, or the company, we use a “living with your ...” tools and EVC™ certificates, which set out the important aspects and data on every car we offer. This includes the real-world range, charging times (AC and DC), charging costs, charge solutions, performance, towing capacity.

Even charging tariffs, motor insurance and bidirectional charging are included. Our business is featured as a top-rated Trustpilot business for a reason.

Is a Hyundai INSTER Electric a good car to lease?
A fairly recent EV to launch in the UK, this cheap option gets 7/10 from Top Gear, 9/10 from Electrifying and 5/5 from WhatCar? The Pros are the comfortable ride, competitive price, cute looks and practicality. Cons are the plastic interior, costs for the bigger battery option and lifeless steering. On the whole, the media and press like the Inster.

Is a Hyundai INSTER electric lease right for me or the business?
Moving into a battery option vehicle is not always easy. Some customers read too many biased submissions in the press or hear negativity in pubs and bars across the UK, without ever having the cold hard facts. We use a simplified “living with your ...” analysis together with our EVC™  to help customers understand this better. While the INSTER receives positive reviews, and is great value, this doesn’t mean it is right for every customer. Ensure you do not underestimate the key metrics like real-world range, charging times, charging costs, charge points and Whole of Life Costs
