Leasing a Mercedes EQS in the UK

You can be forgiven for thinking that the only luxury electric cars to lease are the Tesla Model S / X or the Porsche Taycan. Another potentially class leading EV has emerged (albeit under the radar) in the form of the Merc EQS Saloon.

So what is an EQS and when can I or the business order one? From 2022, personal and business customers can order a new EQS, with many showrooms across the UK now having this ready to test-drive and demo. Essentially, the EQS is an “S-Class” but replaces the petrol and/or diesel combustion engine for a substantial 108 kWh lithium-ion battery configuration, making this one of the biggest “EV engines” on the market today.

But will the range of an EQS be enough with all that size? A great question, and one which many e-car lease customers will be asking before they order their £100,000+ prestige car! Mercedes have announced three options for the UK which includes:

• A 450+ 245 kW 2WD vehicle;
• A 580+ 385 kW 4WD vehicle; and
• An AMG 53 484 kW 4WD vehicle.

Taking the entry-model, the 450+, this EV Saloon can offer a combined range of around 330 miles in colder climates and an astonishing 460 miles in warmer weather on a full charge. While the distance the EQS will travel is reliant on the type of journey, and driver behaviour, it is still providing a near 400 miles of pure electric driving. And the performance is equally amazing with the 245 kW (or 330hp) motor allowing for 6.2 second 0 - 62 mph times and 130 mph top speeds.

In terms of charging your new EQS, the 11 kW AC max allows for 0 – 100% charging times of 12 hours with the 207 kW DC rapid charging capabilities allowing for circa 30 minute 10 – 80% times. And who thought that modern EVs were too slow to charge on the public network?

Even the AMG EQS 53 provides some incredible performance for our personal and business lease customers; and at £157,000+ it’s probably what you would expect. Combined winter performance will be around 295 miles and circa 400 miles in summer on a full charge. However, it is the performance of the AMG EV which separates this from so many other cars.

The 560 kW motor is equivalent of 750hp and will allow for 0 – 62mph times of around 3.5 seconds and 155 mph top speeds. If you want the quickest electric car to lease, make sure you add the EQS AMG to that list. In terms of charging your new EQS, the 11 kW AC max allows for 0 – 100% charging times of 12 hours with the 207 kW DC rapid charging capabilities allowing for circa 30 minute 10 – 80% times.

But will the EQS be popular in the UK? Many would question some of the luxury/prestige manufacturers utilising zero emission technology as part of their product suite. However, the Porsche Taycan Saloon and Cross Turismo, Tesla Model S and upcoming Lucid Air are proving these doubters very wrong. For company car and salary sacrifice drivers, the ability to minimise their tax exposure has enabled access to some truly amazing eco cars. From April 2022, your typical luxury and/or supercar would attract 37% BiK for the 160g/km+ emissions in comparison to the 2% for an EV emitting 0g/km!

The net result to your senior manager or director is literally thousands of pounds per month in tax savings. Financially speaking, there is no better decision than transitioning from a combustion vehicle to the electric format particularly while the Government have committed to a further 3 years at the 2% BiK threshold. And where the EQS could revolutionise an industry is the private hire and chauffeur sector. With towns and cities across the UK adopting Clean Air Zones and Congestion Zone emission tariffs, if you operate a fleet of non-EVs you may find your business can no longer operate. The EQS will almost certainly be a key part of the luxury private hire market for bigger cities like London.

How much is a Mercedes EQS Electric to lease?
rcedes did not launch the EQS saloon to appeal to those business or personal customers on a budget. With options ranging around £100,000 to £160,000, expect finance rentals of £1250 - £2500 per month depending on your desired specification and contract. The EQS Saloon is really an alternative to Porsche EVs and some of the high specification BMW and Audi options to lease. Indeed, it is the ideal “daily” to compliment your supercar. Is a Mercedes EQS Electric a good car to lease?
There is no doubting Mercedes ability to design automobiles; their product has been consistently some of the best to buy or lease in the UK for many years. Independent review websites and media outlets are recognising this with a plethora of 9/10 and 4.5/5 scores across the board. Will the EQS be a top contender for the Car of the Year 2022? It is certainly going to be up there

Is a Mercedes EQS electric lease right for me or the business?
For any e-car lease customer looking to spend upwards of £100,000, we would encourage them to consider all aspects of the vehicle notwithstanding the luxury, specification and performance. We know this luxury EV is a great car to lease but suitability is about taking into account range, charging times plus Whole of Life costs like electricity costs, charge point infrastructure and insurance. All of this must be reviewed before you commit to a lease, as this is a fixed term contract. If the car is not suitable, you cannot simply return it. Effortless luxury it is but not so much if the car turns about be different from what you or the fleet manager anticipated

Please don’t add this to the list which might contain the Fiat 500 electric, the VW e-Up! or Smart EQ. While the EQS will offer an incredible driving experience, this is at a cost to you or the company.

What is the range of an electric Mercedes EQS?
Personal and business leasing customers in the UK will be pleased to note that the EQS has some of the longest ranges available for any electric car. There is a small list of vehicles which can carry out over 350 miles+ on a full charge but the EQS is one of them. Indeed, in the right climates and driving conditions, some of the EQS models will enable a driver to achieve over 400 miles on a full charge!
