The luxury EV market is about to get a whole lot busier and more exciting with the recent confirmation of a new entrant. Formerly known as the EQC concept, the upcoming G Class electric is a battery format of the popular station wagon which has been the reserve of footballers, entrepreneurs and wealthy for the last few years.

Indeed, the G63 is one of the most-thrilling SUVs you can enjoy in the combustion world, via a 4 litre V8 BiTurbo configuration. But to complement their product line-up, Mercedes have now pushed this model into the zero-emission sector, keeping the aesthetics the same but replacing the engine for a gargantuan 124 kWh battery setup.

“Unparalleled in off-road capability” the new G580 is aiming to deliver a robust driving experience, luxury touches and a green-led ambition. The exterior preserves the iconic and distinctive shape with an interior boasting room and carrying capacity amidst a luxury and elegant finish. The unique G-TURN and G-STEERING are allowing for axis spins and precise turning, so that off-road driving is more than just a hypothesis.

But so far, we are only aware of one key model coming to the UK leasing market – the Edition One. This will include key features like – 20” alloys on aero wheels, night package, MANUFAKTUR logo package, painted brake callipers, ambient lighting, design box (which holds the charging cables rather than a spare wheel), protective strips, exclusive Nappa leather, MBUX multimedia, Burmester 3D surround, G-ROAR, leather grab handles, tinted glass, heated windscreen, hinted steering wheel, adaptive highbeam, smartphone integration, Urban Guard, Torque vectoring, anti-theft alarm and Electric Dynamic Select.

As you can determine from the Mercedes configurator - this is a truly luxury all-electric SUV. However, choose between opalite white mango, obsidian black, grey and south-seas mango paint if you want to personalise this.

But how does the G Class G580 Electric perform?

The AWD SUV option will have a 116 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 4.7 seconds, 112 mph top speeds and 432 kW (or 579hp). Expect a cold weather range of around 195 miles with warmer weather allowing for 245 miles – a combined range of around 220 miles on a full charge.

On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 12 hour and 30 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 200 kW DC maximum allowing 34 minute 10 – 80% times. This has a fuel equivalent of 77 mpg. A cargo volume of 555L is available with this car. This will have no Bidirectional charging capabilities. Nor can it tow.
