Leasing a Smart #3 in the UK

“Sporty, stylish and ever-so-smooth” the latest innovation from Smart will arrive into the UK for 2024. Following the recently launched Smart #1 , which is a more traditional SUV option, the updated #3 will bring more modern designs and the Coupe ergonomics which have proved to be more popular with many personal and business leasing customers. The British public are 4x4, crossover and SUV obsessed after all!

But what options will be available in the new all-electric hashtag 3?

The German group have announced a series of models including:

  •  Pro – the entry model;
  •  Pro+ - this includes 19” alloys, panoramic sunroof, 360 degree camera, highway assist, climate control, CyberSparks LED, automatic high beam, powered tailgate, privacy glass, adaptive cruise control, ambient lighting, front and rear parking sensors and traction control;
  • Premium – this will add Matrix LED, gesture tailgate, heat pump, 10” HUD, mobile phone wireless charging and Beats audio;
  •  Brabus – this matches the specification of the Premium but with the Brabus sport styling; and
  •  25th Anniversary Edition.

In the pro and pro plus enjoy colours like the digital white, cyber silver and Meta Black. In the Brabus enjoy the two-tone Eclipse Black / Digital White, Radiant Red / Meta Black, Radiant Red / Atom Grey and the unique Photon Orange.

But how does the Smart #3 perform, is it a good BEV to buy or lease?

To provide choice for UK customers there will be an array of options to choose from including:

  •  Pro - from £35,000 this RWD SUV Coupe will have a 47 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 5.9 seconds, 112 mph top speeds and 200 kW (or 268hp). Expect a combined winter range of 140 miles with warmer weather allowing for 190 miles. On charging, the 7.4 kW AC max will allow 7 hour and 30 minute 0 – 100% charging times with the 130 kW DC maximum allowing 32 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 370L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 142 mpg. This EV will have no Bidirectional charging. And the car will not be able to tow;
  •  Pro+ - from £37,000 this RWD SUV Coupe will have a 62 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 5.8 seconds, 112 mph top speeds and 200 kW (or 268hp). Expect a combined winter range of 185 miles with warmer weather allowing for 250 miles. On charging, the 22 kW AC max will allow 3 hour and 30 minute 0 – 100% charging times with the 150 kW DC maximum allowing 27 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 370L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 144 mpg. This EV will have no Bidirectional charging. And the car will be able to tow 750kg (unbraked) and 1600kg (braked);
  •  Premium - from £40,000 this matches Pro+;
  •  Brabus - from £45,000 this AWD option will have a 62 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 5.8 seconds, 112 mph top speeds and 200 kW (or 268hp). Expect a combined winter range of 175 miles with warmer weather allowing for 235 miles. On charging, the 22 kW AC max will allow 3 hour and 30 minute 0 – 100% charging times with the 150 kW DC maximum allowing 27 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 370L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 144 mpg. This EV will have no Bidirectional charging. And the car will be able to tow 750kg (unbraked) and 1600kg (braked).

How much will the Smart #3 be to lease?

Because this is still a new vehicle, with limited information and RV data, the prices have not settled but expect more precision in 2024 from Daimler. But with prices around £35,000 - £45,000 on the various options, expect lease prices at circa £300 – £500 per month.

When leasing the Smart SUV, you need to select your term (how long you want the vehicle for), annual mileage (the miles you cover per year including commute and personal trips), the initial rental (the amount you pay in month 1 can be low or high deposit) and any maintenance provision (you can maintain or you can ask for this to be included).

Contract hire is not based on a set price; this is about a bespoke quotation on a vehicle (and specification) and in accordance with your actual driving requirements and behaviour.

For personal, business and salary sacrifice enquiries, ensuring you receive the most accurate information on the new Smart #3 is key to the e-car team. Whether or not it is a good EV is more than just an aesthetics and price analysis. Not every option is the same, as you can see when comparing the Pro, Pro+ and Premium for example.

Especially for fleets and salary sacrifice propositions, where company car tax savings are formidable, it is easy to miss some key details. This is where the “living with your …” and EVC™ which we offer to all customers is so important. All our deals set out the range (in different seasons and driving conditions), charging times, charging costs (and cost per mile), battery specification, towing capacities and performance.

And we also introduce you to key partners who make the EV lifestyle amenable – charge point location from Zap Map, Business Insurance from Churchill Expert or charge points from Rightcharge.

How much is a Smart #3 to lease?
With no official arrival date, the final pricing (and deals) is still under review. Indications suggest that the starting prices will be around £35,000, so expect leasing prices to be advertised around £300 - £500 per month subject to requirements.

Is a Smart #3 a good car to lease?
While no Coupes have made it to the UK roads just yet, some of the major automotive publications have been reviewing this new EV. Auto Express give it a 3.5/5, CAR magazine at 4/5 and Autocar 3/5. The Pros are the style and aesthetics, robust range and performance, credible driving experience plus the reasonable value for money compared to some other options. The Cons seem to suggest an over-sensitive steering, quirky interior and the media system is reportedly difficult.

Is a Smart #3 lease right for me or the business?
Product suitability and assessment is key. Don’t just fall for the aesthetics, technology or performance with a new zero-emission option, especially where it is an attractive tax position for any BCH sal sac deals. At e-car lease we encourage all of our customers to use our award-winning tools to understand range, charging times, battery option and the EV lifestyle as a whole. There are some obligations which must be understood to avoid any undue difficulty during the electrification process. So long as you are organised and prepared, there should be no issue.

Where do I find the best Smart #3 lease deals in the UK?
The e-car lease deals always try to offer value to our customers, especially with exciting EVs like the Smart 3. However, we do appreciate that price comparison websites for electric car leasing can be used like AutoLeaseCompare, CarWow, Leasing.com or LeaseLoco. As we only offer usership solutions (use and return), you will need to speak with a local dealer / retailer about purchase products like Hire Purchase, Personal Contract Purchase or Contract Purchase.

What is the cheapest Smart #3 leasing option?
At the time of writing (December 2023), the cheapest model will be the smaller battery 200kW Pro 49kWh 5dr Auto.

What is the range of a Smart #3?
At e-car lease, we don’t use just one figure to help customers understand a range. Indeed, our “real world range” analysis will review summer vs winter driving and motorways vs smaller roads. For example, the #3 Premium will cover 215 miles in cities and 155 miles on a motorway in colder weather compared to the summer capabilities of 320 miles and 200 miles respectively. Avoid best-case WLTP statements.

Can you tow with a Smart #3?
Yes – you can tow with the bigger battery options (Pro+ Premium and Brabus).

What is the towing capacity of the Smart #3?
Every option can tow 750kg (unbraked) and 1600kg (braked

What is the MPG of the Smart #3?
The Pro is at 142 mpg, the Pro+ 144 mpg, the Premium 144 mpg and the Brabus 134 mpg
