Leasing a Subaru Solterra in the UK

Are Subaru entering the electric car market? Well until 2022, a manufacturer with a stellar reputation for petrol-based rally cars (the iconic Impreza) were doing little to join the EV revolution.

While the group did invest in Plug-In technology, the pure electrification journey finally came to fruition when their co-partner in engineering, Toyota, allowed them to share their bz4X platform – Subaru renamed this as the Solterra.

This is a mid-sized SUV which is aiming to compete with the Mercedes EQA, Skoda Enyaq and Genesis GV60. The crossover and 4x4 segment is without a doubt the most competitive when it comes to EVs with an array of excellent product options for personal and business leasing customers (and salary sacrifice) to enjoy.

Built on the e-Subaru global platform, the new Solterra (meaning “Sun” and “Earth”) will be launched with two specifications, the Limited (around £50,000) and the Touring (around £53,000). The website is not updated yet for the exact specifications, but reports suggest the Limited will include 18” alloys, heated seats, powered tailgate, heated steering wheel adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking.

The Touring should provide leather upholstery, a panoramic roof, Harmon Kardon system and 20” alloys. Both models will include a heat pump – this device effectively warms and cools the car’s batteries for example by sending excess heat to the cabin. By maintaining battery temperature, this optimises battery performance for range and charging times.

But does the electric Solterra perform?  By sharing the Toyota engineering, this electric SUV is based on a 71.4 kWh usable battery which provides 160 kW (or 215hp), 0 – 62 times of 7.7 seconds and top speeds of 99mph. The range of the Subaru EV should be around 195 miles in winter and 260 miles in spring / summer (based on a full charge and on a combined basis). In terms of charging times, the 6.6 kW AC max allows 0 – 100% times of just under 13 hours with the 150 kW DC rapid charge allowing 30 minute 10 – 80% times.

What are the advantages to leasing this car?  1 - EVs offer a great driving experience and this is something which is often overlooked. Zero-emission vehicles are not just about ensuring a decarbonised and environmentally friendly future, they also offer a robust and fun experience 2- the Whole of Life costs can be much better for personal or business customers.

With lower servicing, running and tyre costs, the higher monthly rental on the finance aspects of the EV can be offset by these other associated elements. Use our “Living with your ...” tools to calculate the cost of fuelling the EV together with the rental and maintenance aspects 3 – for company car and salary sacrifice customers, the 2% BiK provides cost-effective tax liabilities which are substantially cheaper than combustion alternatives.

For companies, the ability to claim back 100% of the finance rentals provides tax efficiency (a car must emit no more than 50g/km of CO2 to do this).

How much is a Subaru Solterra to lease?
Ranging between £47,000 - £53,000, this will not be a cheap electric SUV to lease. It’s also fair to say that the manufacturer has struggled in the UK’s contract hire market due to residual value and discounts – hopefully their zero-emission option will correct this. We expect monthly prices to be around £500 – £700 per month, contract and specification dependent.

Is a Subaru Solterra a good car to lease?
Sharing platforms with Toyota provides the Solterra EV with a huge amount of credibility. The Toyota brand carries a healthy reputation for quality, reliability and value in the UK, so Subaru will be hoping to share this. On the review side of things – Car and Driver are at 7/10 and the car connection are at 7.6/10. With the car only being recently launched, there is not a huge amount of detail on this yet.

Is a Subaru Solterra lease right for me or the business?
If you are looking for a mid-sized SUV for the family and / or pets, then it is likely the Subaru will appear on your EV wish-list. But product suitability with an electric car involves more than just its style, practicality or value; both PCH and BCH drivers must ensure that the seasonal ranges, charging speeds, charging times and running costs are all suitable. Using the e-car lease bespoke “Living with your …” tools, you can quickly and easily understand whether this car meets your needs and requirements

Where do I find the best Subaru Solterra lease deals in the UK?
Many EV lease comparison sites like AutoLeaseCompare, CarWow, LeaseFetcher and LeaseLoco will provide a price to you, or the fleet manager, from a variety of brokers and dealerships throughout the UK. What is the cheapest Subaru Solterra Electric leasing option?
At the time of writing (May 2022) the cheapest model to select is the HATCHBACK 150kW Limited 71.4kWh 5dr Auto AWD. From £47,000, this will not be on a “cheap EV” list.

What is the range of an Electric Subaru Solterra?
Because an electric vehicle will operate differently according to external weather conditions, driving speeds and driving styles, our e-car lease website via the “Living with your …” tools, will present a balanced view as to how far the Subaru will travel on full range in accordance with these conditions. For example, expect this SUV to travel around 160 miles on a motorway and 225 miles in city-driving on a full charge with warmer weather paving way for 205 miles on a motorway and 335 miles for urban conditions. Make an assessment based on the mixed basis – do not just use the headline WLTP range.

Can you tow with a Subaru Solterra?
No - you cannot purchase a towing attachment for this EV.

What is the towing capacity of the Subaru Solterra?
N/A - you cannot tow with this vehicle.

What is the MPG of the Subaru Solterra?
