Leasing a Volvo EX90 Electric in the UK

The Geely-backed Swedish car producer are intent on becoming the world’s leading all-electric SUV supplier for 2023 (and beyond). With the Polestar 3 having only just been announced in October 2022, the formal confirmation that Volvo will also be offering a similar alternative is great news for the existing fanbase of what has become known as the world’s safest cars.

And for those personal or business leasing customers with bigger families, the 7-seat / 3-row configuration will be warmly received. While the mid-size luxury SUV market is competitive for EVs, in the same way that it is for combustion, there are a distinct lack of 7-seat pure EV options to lease.

With only the Mercedes EQB targeting the 7-seat market so far, the addition of the Volvo will only compliment this. Indeed, the EX90 will be ultimately replacing the XC90 (a combustion and plug-in format), as Volvo work towards becoming an electric-only car manufacturer for 2030. Lead times on the new EX90 are stated to be 16 – 18 months, so this may only feature early 2024 at best!

What specifications will the EX90 be offering?

Like many early innovations, particularly in the BEV market, there is still only limited information on the Volvo website  - so the final delivered product may vary a little. This is something many 2021 and 2022 new car customers have experienced, with microchip and parts shortages leading to vehicle changes during the build.

The e-car lease team are also aware that the innovative products, like the EX90, can be amended in conjunction with the market demands. And while it is clearly palpable that the 7 comfortable, and adult, seats which will be a key feature and selling-point for this SUV, the car will still include great specification on their range, which so far includes:

  • Ultra – set to offer high definition pixel lights, safe space technology with lidar, air purifier, 4-zone climate system, 14.5” centre display, 360 degree camera, 8” driver display, active air suspension, active chassis, adaptive cruise, auto dimmed rear view mirror, BLIS and cross traffic alert, collision avoidance and mitigation, HUD, park pilot assist, 22” alloys, flush door handles with ground lighting, panoramic sunroof, roof rails in gloss black, power tailgate, alarm, alcohol lock preparation, smart card key, side impact protection, heated front and rear seats, front seat massage, driver-seat memory, Bowers & Wilkins audio and wireless phone charging; and
  • Edition 1 – some of the early options to the UK market will be based on the introductory special edition model (expect to see this in most Volvo showrooms). This will reflect the same specification as the above with other key options to highlight like keyless entry and start, hill start and descent control, 22” black alloys, heated steering wheel, heat pump (for enhanced cabin heated and cooling efficiency), heated rear seats, lane keeping aid, run-off road mitigation, road sign information display, WHIPS, laminated side windows, Volvo Cars Services.

Both options (and all others) will use the Luminar fitted technology for pedestrian detection coupled with 16 ultrasonic sensors, 8 camera and 5 radars for achieving high levels of vehicle autonomy, which Tesla have so far enjoyed as a primary selling point.

In terms of colours, expect Vapour Grey, Platinum Grey, Onyx Black, Denim Blue, Sand Dune and Crystal White to feature alongside the quilter Nordico leather interior which is available in Dawn, Charcoal or a Charcoal/Cardamom mixture. So far, the only additional feature you can add to the EX90 is the automatic foldable towbar which includes the Trailer Stability Assist Technology. For any lease customer with a caravan or trailer, the EX90 could be the perfect solution.

But how will the EX90 perform – is this a good battery / range SUV?

To provide some choice, Volvo will be allowing customers to decide between two key battery configurations including:

  • Twin Motor – expected to be around £96,000 this model will have a usable 107 kWh lithium-ion battery and this will offer 0 – 62 times of 5.9 seconds, 112 mph top speeds and 300 kW (or 402 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 240 miles with warmer weather allowing for 320 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 11 hour and 30 minute 0 – 100% charging times with the 250 kW DC maximum allowing 32 minute 10 – 80% times. A generous cargo volume of 1915L, the EX90 will also tow 750 kg (Unbraked) and an amazing 2200 kg (Braked). To be clear, this will have 7 adult seats, with 4 allowing for Isofix; and
  • Twin Motor Performance – at just over £100,000 this model will have a usable 107 kWh lithium-ion battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 4.9 seconds, 112 mph top speeds and 380 kW (or 510 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 235 miles with warmer weather allowing for 305 miles. On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 11 hour and 30 minute 0 – 100% charging times with the 250 kW DC maximum allowing 32 minute 10 – 80% times. The Performance model offers the same practicality for towing and cabin space.

The only obstacle to the EX90 for UK customers will be the price, which is actually above and beyond the Polestar 3, with their £80,000 starting price. While business lease customers and salary sacrifice schemes do currently enjoy the beneficial approach of HMRC on Benefit-in-Kind, the PCH and retail customers will have to think more carefully about a price-range more readily seen with Range Rovers and even prestige performance sports cars – Lamborghini and Ferrari!

With economies of scale and inward manufacturer investment, the e-car team do hope that prices can be stabilised notwithstanding the cost of living crisis and inflationary issues which the UK faces at November 2022. The proof for Volvo will be in their order banks for the new EX90, which the group will expect to be one of the leading electric SUVs in 2023 / 2024.

How much is a Volvo EX90 Electric to lease?
With limited information available, the e-car lease team do not yet have exact rentals from our finance companies (we are a credit broker and not a lender). However, with cost prices between £96,000 - £101,000, the e-car lease team expect monthly deals to start at around £1400 - £1700 per month depending on your contract term, mileage and initial rental / deposit.

Is a Volvo EX90 Electric a good car to lease?
Without any product to test-drive until at least 2023, much of the reviews and speculation are based on indicative images and technological attributes. “Half car, half computer” says Top Gear and “it’s firm’s longest-range EV, its most expensive” states Autocar. Volvo have an enviable reputation for safety, practicality and ergonomics but at a reasonable cost which often places their product just below the likes of Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Volvo customers, even for electric cars, are generally more concerned about product delivery rather than aesthetics, image and badge. Will the indicative price tags allow this to continue?

Is a Volvo EX90 Electric lease right for me or the business?
Product suitability, as well as finance product suitability, is something the e-car lease take very seriously. More so now with the Consumer Duty principles which are putting in place clear standards of consumer protection across the UK. One of the key aspects is to “avoid causing foreseeable harm” which for electric cars is more pertinent with range and charging times. The e-car team do understand your circumstances change, so we use our “living with your …” tools to set out the clear capability of the product, alongside the finance product, so that you or the business can appreciate whether or not this EV will fit your lifestyle now, or in the future. There are more to EVs than just monthly price, tax-savings and lower-running costs; charge point infrastructure, the cost of charging and seasonal range are key considerations.

Where do I find the best Volvo EX90 Electric lease deals in the UK?
At the present (November 2022) there are no confirmed deals from the select finance companies e-car lease work alongside. While Volvo website does offer subscription, purchase and 36 fixed term solutions, these are likely to change as the product evolves. For the best electric car deals  please check our website. However, you can expect aggregator websites, like AutoLeaseCompare, CarWow, Moneyshake, LeaseFetcher or LeaseLoco to show market-leading deals too. Or for the more personal experience you can also visit your local retailer to get a PCP or HP quotation. Lease or buy the new Volvo EX90? Just compare the different offers and products available to you. It is about what suits your needs and requirements.

What is the cheapest Volvo EX90 Electric leasing option?
At the time of writing (November 2022) the cheapest option to lease is the Ultimate Twin Motor, with a starting price expected to be around £96,000.

What is the range of a Volvo EX90 Electric?
Range on an electric car is something which is crucial for many customers, particularly any high-mileage company car drivers. But EVs perform very differently depending on the weather and your driving style which is why the e-car website tools shows you different statistics based on the scenario. The standard Twin Motor will offer a range (on a full charge) of 195 miles on a motorway in colder weather, with this increasing to 280 miles for urban driving. In warmer weather, expect 245 miles on a motorway and 390 miles in urban conditions. The Performance model will offer around 10 – 15 miles less, as the battery configuration is centred on increased power and acceleration as opposed to battery efficiency.

Can you tow with a Volvo EX90 Electric?
Yes – you can tow with this SUV option. As per the Volvo website, the electric towbar (automatic and foldable) is expected to be around a £1,000 – £1,200 manufacturer option.

What is the towing capacity of the Volvo EX90 Electric?
Both the Twin Motor and Performance models will tow 750 kg (Unbraked) and 2200 kg (Braked).

What is the MPG of the Volvo EX90 Electric?
The Twin Motor will have a vehicle fuel equivalent 104 mpg with the Performance set to offer a vehicle fuel equivalent 104 mpg.
