Want an electric estate car?

The choices are surprisingly limited for UK leasing customers looking for the best solution. While MG were quickest to the market, with their cost-effective MG5 , the rest of the manufacturing world has been significantly slower.

Yes Porsche released their Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo, but for those without a £80,000+ budget, there has been nothing to offer until the Stellantis group confirmed their next generation of Peugeot 308 and Vauxhall Astra would include all-electric estate options.

The Vauxhall Astra is synonymous with value, practicality and is a model designed for the working-class populous. For an EV to work it needs to offer value, particularly for the retail and consumer demographic who do not enjoy the same tax benefits which are in place for company car and salary sacrifice customers.

This is something which even the Government acknowledged in their confusing statements on EV sales in the UK. As reported only today (27 September 2023), the Daily Mail reported that at least half of all cars will need to be purely electric by 2028.

So, while the move to electric has been pushed to 2025 from 2030, the original ZEV mandate is still in place for car manufacturers who MUST change their demographic or face considerable fines and levies (Percentage of new vehicles which must be zero emission 2024 – 22%, 2028 52%, 2030 80% and 2035 100%). 

And practical family estates like the Astra are exactly the types of cars we need to fulfil these lofty obligations. Vauxhall have already confirmed two key models (starting from around £42,000), with a cheaper third to follow including:

1. Sports Tourer 115kW GS 54kWh 5dr Auto;
2. Sports Tourer 115kW Ultimate 54kWh 5dr Auto; and
3. Sports Tourer 115kW Design 54kWh 5dr Auto. 

So far, we know the specification will include:

• GS – key features like a black roof, 360 degree parking camera, adaptive cruise control, front/rear parking sensors, keyless entry and start, climate control, automatic emergency braking, LED lights and fog lights, PurePanel navigation, dark tinted rear windows, powered and heated door mirrors, heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, heated sports seats and 18” black alloys; and
•  Ultimate – additional key features to include panoramic glass sunroof, wireless charging, Intelli-HUD, clean air cabin system, LED pixel lights, heated windscreen. 

Colours on the Astra Estate will include Electric Yellow, Vulcan Grey, Crimson Red, Cobalt Blue and Artic White (FOC).

And how does the Astra Tourer perform – is it a good EV?

This FWD SUV will have a 50.8 kWh usable battery which will offer 0 – 62 times of 8.5 seconds, 106 mph top speeds and 115 kW (or 154 hp). Expect a combined winter range of 155 miles with warmer weather allowing for 215 miles.

On charging, the 11 kW AC max will allow 5 hour and 30 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 100 kW DC maximum allowing 26 minute 10 – 80% times. A cargo volume of 460L is available with this car. It has a vehicle fuel equivalent of 147 mpg. This option cannot tow. This EV will have no Bidirectional charging.
