Maserati GranTurismo Folgore Electric Leasing

Leasing a Maserati GranTurismo Folgore Electric in the UK

The move by many of the world’s leading car and van, manufacturers to pure electric solutions is in no way surprising. While Tesla took an early lead (as the true EV innovators) from 2020 to present day (2023), new and exciting products have been teased or even introduced to UK leasing customers.

And high-end luxury and prestige brands haven’t been remiss in this department; we have already seen unique cars like the Lotus Eletre SUV, the Rolls-Royce Spectre and Polestar 3 SUV being formerly announced in 2022.

But the Italian luxury car producer Maserati (who are now owned by the Stellantis brand) are another new entrant to the EV market in 2023, with two new zero-emission products available to order including the Grecale Folgore SUV and GranTurismo Folgore Coupe.

The Folgore GranTurismo is what Maserati term a “grand tourer” being 2-door Coupe with the “allure of exotic Italian style, combined with race-bred performance…” While it has been available in combustion format, the 2022 / 2023 models will include the electric platform – which the Italian brand use “Folgore” to denote.

And on the surface, the introduction of lithium batteries should not derail the Maserati principles – fun to drive, luxury tradition and innovations are guaranteed with these cars. Indeed, their website suggests that their electric product, Folgore, will be top of the segments when it comes to highway autonomy and performance.

And what specification will be available on the GranTurismo EV?

There is limited information on what options and configurations will feature at launch but with a starting price of £200,000 (and upwards) there is an expectation that this supercar will have to deliver on all fronts. If inspired by the existing “Sport”, expect sport-specific front splitter, rear extractor for balance, Bi-Xenon headlights with Adaptive Light Control, LED Daytime running lights.

Also expect the standard 20” alloys with Brembo brake calipers, along with a whole host of exterior choices. On the interior, the spec could include Alcantara trim on the sport steering wheel, fine-tuned luxury leather, dashboard clock, Easy Entry system for accessing the rear seats as well as climate control. Or will the “MC” be the donor vehicle? The extreme expression range adding a carbon fibre bonnet, air vents on the bonnet, upgraded front grille and bespoke splitter with headlight trim.

The MC is all about racing with a re-profiled front bumper to ensure maximum downforce together with integrated vents to channel airflow plus a set of aggressive 20” alloys. Inside the MC possesses carbon fibre-backed seats, Poltrona Frau™ leather and Alcantara, flat-bottomed steering wheel plus interior colour choices. The vehicle will make use of lightweight materials such as aluminium and magnesium to reduce weight levels. And, to replicate the brand’s signature V8 rumbles, this will emit a unique special sound signature.

But how does the electric GranTurismo perform? Is it fast? What is the range?

Starting from around £200,000, the usable 83.0 kWh lithium-ion battery will offer 0 – 62 times of 2.7 seconds, 199 mph top speeds and 560 kW (or 751 hp). And the drivetrain will be AWD. This will be one of the quickest and most powerful EVs you can lease or buy in 2023. Expect a combined winter range of 220 miles with warmer weather allowing for 300 miles on a full charge.

Maserati GranTurismo Folgore Electric Lease Information

For a supercar, this will still offer a robust EV lifestyle for many UK drivers. On charging, the 22 kW AC max will allow 4 hour and 30 min 0 – 100% charging times with the 270 kW DC maximum allowing 18 minute 10 – 80% times. While a coupe, this will still have a reasonable cargo volume of 270L and vehicle fuel equivalent of 129 mpg.

And is there a market for supercars in an all-electric format? Will the £200,000 price tag be too much?

The interesting aspect of the electric car segment is that there are a whole host of luxury and supercar options with six-figure price tags. But for business customers, in particularly those PLC, Ltd and LLP organisations, there are attractive taxation benefits with EVs.

For those customers who wish to purchase a car (cash, hire purchase or lease purchase) because an EV emits 0 g/km of CO2, HMRC allow you to claim 100% of the purchase cost against your corporation tax liability. In contrast, a combustion model would only allow yearly write-downs via capital allowances at 18% for 1-50 g/km CO2 emitting options or 6% for those emitting 51 g/km of CO2 (or more). And for contract hire/operating lease customers, in utilising an EV, 100% of the rentals are allowable against corporation tax, with 50% of the Vat on the finance rentals / 100% of the Vat on the maintenance rentals also reclaimable.

Add to that the benefit-in-kind position for company car drivers (the employee using the car), in that electric cars only have a 2% BiK rate until at least tax year 2025-26. For a 40% income taxpayer, the Maserati would only cost around £130 per month in tax. A combustion equivalent would be in the realm of £1000+! That is not to say personal, and retail, customers cannot enjoy the thrilling adventures of electric supercars. Not unlike combustion cars you can still enjoy blistering 0 – 62 times and track-like performance. Just without the tailpipe emissions.
