The move to an all-electric car procurement industry has been met with a mix of ambition and trepidation in the UK. With a new Labour Government suggesting a painful budget ahead, the news for the automotive industry when it comes to EVs is being met with considerable intrigue (and slight trepidation).
This is especially so with the suggestion that the 2035 ZEV Mandate will instead become a 2030 ZEV Mandate, meaning that all new cars in the UK must be zero-emission or manufacturers will incur fines / penalties. Impossible?
Well not according to the people of Norway, who set a new world record for the percentage of all-electric cars sold vs combustion. For August 2024, Norway recorded an amazing 94% of pure electric vehicles compared to other combustion options. Not unlike the UK, the Norwegian Government has been supporting the uptake through tax incentives as well as bus lane and parking benefits. The Norwegian zero-emission goal of 2025 looks set to be achievable!
Of course, every country has its own nuances when it comes to vehicle policies, infrastructure and ethos. However, the incredible success story of Norway does prove that a more electric-heavy demographic is possible. As the Visit Norway website sets out the country is very much the EV capital of the world. Maybe the UK can emulate this success as it pushes towards a nation of EVs (in July we recorded an 18.5% market share for BEVs)
Cosmetic dentistry is a growing business in the UK, with many dentists concentrating more on work associated with the appearance of teeth and facial enhancements (as opposed to prevention and treatment of dental disorders). The fact is that improving our nations dental aesthetics, teeth colour, alignments and smile configuration is a lucrative business.
Even more so when many UK citizens are no longer using health tourism destinations like Turkey, in order to procure orthodontic works. For the UK dentists pursuing this as a career, there are considerations on how best to run their business. In conjunction with their accountant, there will often be an analysis of the sole trader / partnership routes compared to a separate legal entity route under a limited company (Ltd) or limited liability partnership (LLP)
Simple overviews on tax and legal / accountancy obligations can be reviewed via some interesting blogs like Dentistry and Acuity Law . While in many cases the most practical and secure route is to take your cosmetic dentist practice into an incorporated status, you should always work with a reliable accountancy and legal operation.
For a limited company, the query of fleet vehicles and company cars is something which commonly arises. While many will have run their vehicles personally, in successful cosmetic dentist companies, there will be an incentive to more wisely offset their Corporation Tax position, especially when it comes to cars for the owners / directors and even the staff or pool cars.
Lease v Buy is something which many accountants will discuss in depth and this is none more so relevant with the situation on electric cars. As per below there are pros and cons with leasing and buying, with each business likely to make a decision based on their individual needs and requirements:
Moving towards electric cars is in no way a sacrifice or limitation to your cosmetic dentistry practice. With the impending end of petrol / diesel under the ZEV Mandate set to be moved to 2030, many manufacturers are quickly innovating new and exciting vehicles for UK personal and business customers to enjoy.
