The BYD Seal Electric Car Lease - Your Definitive Guide
The push to zero-emissions isn’t just about electric cars it seems. While the ZEV Mandate is pushing manufacturers of the various cars, vans and commercial vehicles into zero-emissions, there is nothing to say that these need to be lithium-ion batteries and electric based.
Indeed, there are investigations into hydrogen as another fuel source for creating a sustainable and zero-emission future across Europe. One of the main proponents for hydrogen technology are the BMW group who have been utilising hydrogen for many years, even more recently with the uptake of all-electric products.
More recently an iX5 concept was announced which is capable of around 300 miles of range (WLTP) and which can be refuelled in a shorter period of time compared to an EV. As we discuss in many of our EV news and reviews guides, each electric car will have a different AC (slower) and DC (quicker) charging capability.
In a slightly different twist, the Defence Ministry will be implementing hydrogen as part of their electrification strategy. The MoD will be utilising Hydrogen Power Units (HPU) to convert hydrogen into electricity. This forms part of a green strategy to enhance the MoD’s sustainable fleet and to provide more off-grid reliance.
Since August 2023, three sites - Leeming, Devonport and Colchester - have been using this approach. Following its success, more sites will be used as part of moving the MoD to electric vehicles.
However, for the personal and business customers in the UK who are still content with the lithium-ion setup in their EVs, there are a swathe of good products to choose from - like the Chinese BYD pictured here. As part of leasing or contract hire arrangements, we do get asked about the deposit required within our deals.
To be clear we use the term initial rental as opposed to deposit in the leasing world, as we offer what is phrased a “usership” finance product. When you take a lease you are using a vehicle for a predetermined amount of time - 2, 3 or 4 years - with the undertaking to return it at the contract end. In this way, the contract is different to a “purchase” product like hire purchase or contract purchase.
For a customer looking to lease an EV, but with minimum initial capital outlay, there is the opportunity to look at the no deposit / no initial rental. Many websites, like e-car lease, will default to higher initial rentals so it is important that you select 1 on the number of initial rentals you wish to make, as this is saying you need a 1 + 23 / 35 / 47 contract.
What you pay in month 1 will be reflected in the subsequent months. However, because you make a lower initial rental you will notice that the monthly price will change and becomes seemingly more expensive. Again, contract hire is a little different in that the product is not heavily influenced by interest rates; when you make the lower initial rental the overall cost of the agreement is the same.
So, in making a small or big initial rental, it will not influence your overall costs (Whole of Life), as it is more about the personal preference you or the business has. For example, some businesses use no-deposit for their salary sacrifice schemes or company car fleet policies. For private individuals on a personal lease, there is sometimes a preference to minimise capital outlay as a way of protecting the cash-flow.
For BYD leasing customers, the zero-deposit (no initial rental) is available by simply selecting this on the website (or by asking our expert team). The Seal is very much the answer to the Tesla Model 3 and the Polestar 2, which have been incredibly popular in the leasing market.
