Land Rover car leasing
Going full electric with Land Rover has been in the pipeline for many of the UK’s business and personal leasing customers. But until December 2023 the Tata Motors Group (which have owned Jaguar Land Rover since 2008) had not confirmed their full intentions. With their sister company, Jaguar, having launched their indominable I-Pace in 2018, it has been a point of curiosity – where are Land Rover in the electric car market?
However, in a shift of intentions during 2023 (which has resulted from obvious pressures on their combustion formats) it became clear that an all-electric platform would be soon announced. Particularly after their April 2023 statements about a £15 billion / 5 year electric upgrade and improvement programme.
And with much of this money to benefit the UK economy, with the Halewood plant in Merseyside and the Engine Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton, this was welcome news for us all.
And true to their word, the first of their innovations was formerly introduced for pre-ordering, with the full-size Range Rover to be the first option to be available (and which will be built on the flexible Modular Longitudinal Architecture). A future best-seller of 2024, the Range Rover Electric, is now on the table. The JLR group are not new to electrification of luxury cars; indeed, their Jaguar I-Pace was one of the pioneering mass-market EVs to launch in the segment. Until the Tesla Model 3 arrived some 2 years later, the I-Pace was simply the luxury SUV of choice in the UK’s leasing market. And in the world of Range Rover, plug-in electric vehicles have been a mainstay for the group with the Evoque, Velar, Sport and full-size Range Rover all benefitting from a petrol engine coupled with robust lithium-ion batteries.
And let’s not ignore that the Range Rover, and the smaller Sport, are some of the most aspirational and aesthetically-impressive SUVs to lease. With waiting lists topping 18 months, the appetite for these prestigious 4x4s never ceases to amaze. There are simply few manufacturers which can compete with the luxury, bespoke configuration and comfort this brand offers. With an 800V charging architecture to be included, it’s clear the brand is not ignoring electric robustness either.
For UK customers, the great news is that the Range Rover Electric will be constructed in the UK; the architecture and underbody will come from the Solihull plant, the batteries and electric drive units (EDUs) will come from the Wolverhampton plant and the Halewood plant will put this all together! How more British could you get?
At the time of writing (December 2023), the only option to lease or buy in pure electric format will be the Range Rover Electric and this is expected to start at around £150,000 (subject to specification). Expect leasing deals to be around £1500 - £3500 per month.
